Do I need a catalytic converter for emissions?

I wanna try to pass emissions but I sont have any cats on my exhaust. If I fail I dont want them to look under my car and find out I dont have any cats. I was looking at this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...me=rvi%3A1%3A3 I only need to take my emissions test this one last time because my car is only two years away from being exempt from testing. Anyone familiar with this brand? Or can help me find a good cheap one?

I've never seen those before, but if you have a V8, and a full catback exhaust, then that 2.5" cat will hender performance.

You might as well get a Catco Highflow catalytic converter for about 40 dollars more (off eBay) and never have to worry about it again (the high flow cats dont hinder performance like older catalytic converters do)

I just need a "throw away " cat just so pass the test and take it back off afterwards. I know catco seems to make a pretty good cat its just that I wont use it ever again after this week.

True duals on a 3rd gen Camaro/Firebird is going to make fitting cats under it tough, but not impossible.

Post pics of your exhaust routing and we'll go from there. Also, do you have an AIR pump?

3" is only $1 more. Most cats appear to be made by the same source, each company puts their own name on them. So, "Eastern" is probably really "Walker", or Catco, or they all get them from the same sweatshop.

However, I suspect the "true duals" is possible because of
"Car: 1981 monte carlo
Engine: 350 stock carb"

In general, you may not "need" a cat to pass emissions. In general, though, it will most likely help you pass the sniffer. In general, a cat is required to pass visual inspection.

In general, by board rules we have to limit specific discussions to 3rd gen specific vehicles. So, although "in general" this topic might apply, specifically it does not meet board rules.

I run that brand cat from that particular seller actually. I've got a 3" and it's pretty good.

I have a question about the AIR system, why is it illegal to remove it?
And really, if you did remove it and put on new cats that did not need the AIR system then how could anyone notice?

It is illegal because it is part of the Emissions System on the car. If you were to remove it and put on a cat that didn't need the oxygen to work properly like the stock ones do, you would also have to put on a set of non-emissions headers as well to make it look like there was nothing there. You would probably also have to fabricate or find a bracket from a car that did not have the AIR system from the factory to make it look like there was never one there. But, 90% of the guys doing the inspections have done enough of them or in other ways are well aware that our cars came from the factory with an AIR system in place. You would still fail a visual inspection though even if you passed the sniffer due to not having the system in place.
