Where's my computer?!?!?

I have a 1987 Camaro and no one can seem to find the computer or if there even is a computer. The plugin for the diagnostic machine is there, but no computer is recognized. The mechanic I go to was told that the computer is on the driver's side against the firewall, but it isn't. The reason I need to know is because the radiator fan is not coming on and it's causing the engine to get to very high temperatures, the only way to turn the fan on is to turn the air conditioning on. Being as how all of the sensors relating to the fan have been changed, the next step is to check the computer. Any ideas on where I can find the computer or if I even have one??

Your computer's that thing you're typing on now.

Sorry, couldn't resist it.

Actually... try to retrieve any codes. That's a good way to see if the computer's there. Even if you never see a MIL come on, there's still codes stored. Mostly 12... Anyways, go up to the diagnostics connector with a paperclip, and connect the rightmost two on the upper row with the key in the ON position with the engine off. If the MIL lamp starts flashing, then you've got a computer. If it doesn't.. then either you don't have a computer or the light is out.

And come to think of it, if it's a 4bbl then it wouldn't really need a computer, so maybe they took it out.

I think I found the computer right where 84 Z-28 350 said it would be, but I'm not sure. It appears to be a black box with lots of wires going into it and coming out of it. I managed to take down the part number: 37BG. Can someone please tell me if this is it?

Your ECM is just where 84 said. You remove the lower hush plate on the pass side. Then you'll see 2 more 7mm screws on the same lip that the hush screws went into. The ECM will be in a whitish plastic holder thing, and AFAIK they are all silver boxes. It will have a label w/ more than one # on it as well.

What i'd like to know is, how is knowing the location of your ECM gonna help you diagnose the fan problem? Have you checked the relay? If that works out, you only have to determine how the relay is switched, which IIRC on single fan cars is controlled by a fan switch in the pass. side head, not the ecm. I'd have to check this when i got home.

How do I check the relay that goes to the fan? I've already checked all of the sensors or replaced them and I'm not sure what else to do. The reason I was looking for the computer is because the mechanics say that it is the only other thing that goes to the fan and when they plug in the diagnosis machine to the computer port under the steering wheel, it comes up that there's nothing there.

Car: 1999 Chevy Cavalier
Engine: 2.2
Transmission: 5 speed
Axle/Gears: it's part of the transmission
first: wash and vaccume your car (very important)
then,...unplug the fan motor at the fan. either apply battery power to the motor itself or check for voltage at the harness when the engine is warmed up.

personally, I would trace the fan motor wires back as far as possible, cut them, strip off 1/2" and touch the copper to the leads on the battery. if the motor spins, then your relay or sensor is bad. a chiltons manual will give you the location off the sensor and relay, mine is at the fire wall on the drivers side, above the brake booster. when the temp sensor grounds the relay coil, it connects 12V+ to the fan motor. I run two relays in parallel and spliced a toggle switch into the ground on the second relay....so my sensor or relay will never go bad and my car will never overheat due to a bad fan circuit!
