How many 4 wire connectors are by the dist on a carbed car? trying to set timing.

I found one and it is a black weather pack connector, is that what it looks like? or does it look diffrent? Where should the wires go if I tried to chase them? My car is a 86 Z28 and I have a 6 al hooked up to the dist. Thanks

If they are in line, yes those are the ones. The go from your (depending if you have a knock sensor or not) ECS on the driver's side of the firewall to the base of your distributor.

The timing was at 6 before, but how come when I connected the wires the timing did not change? I thought it did that is why you discconectd it? thanks

those four wires go straight to the computer, the ESC module on the firewall has ground,12v,knock sensor(blue),retard signal to ECM. the wires at the distributer are ground, dsi.reference signal, module bypass, advance signal from ECM.

Sometimes the timing won't change when you disconnect them. It really only changes the timing when the car is moveing,WOT,under load, etc... not at idle. It may advance it a slight bit, but not much.

Disconnect the 4-wire harness. You may have to play with the idle speed screw on the throttle bracket a little to keep the car running while you adjust the base timing. Then you'll have to back off on that screw once you plug it back in.

On the other side of the HEI, you'll see the 5 or so wires that go to power (heavy pink), a 3-wire pack (black ground is in the middle, can't remember what the other colors are) and a heavy brown (next to the pink) which goes to the tach.
