Question
I just bought a 1991 Pontiac Firebird Formula, so the kid says, with a 305, I put the vin number in the vin decoder and the info is different from the tech data on the side menu on the main page. Ok so is it a LO3 or the LB9? I don't have pics right now but I'll get some up, I have some outside pics if you can tell me anything by looking at it.. but I know it's either just nothing or something small. the pictures can be found on www.photobucket.com under album sin3246

Just look at the engine, does it look like a carburetor or does it look a nice, with a big plenum and 8 tubes. Its really easy to spot the difference. If it looks like a carburetor and has a round aircleaner sitting on top, then it is TBI, yuck.

Thanks guys, it has a carb, 4bl... yuck? what is bad and/or good about a carbed enginge? Would it be better to swap it out for a TPI and change the computer or would that be too much... plus how much would that cost? (estimate) Hmm, another question, would GM/Pontiac put a trans am/formula gauge cluster panel for the base model, instead of the Speed/Fuel guage and dummy lites like I have on my 1987. Hmm, maybe that is the problem, my speedo doesn't work right, every other gauge works but the speedo doesn't work right, I saw it bounce a couple of times... but that was it, I know the miliage gauge work within the speedo gauge.. but the needle just doesn't budge.

does the car have a carbeurator or TBI injection? they look very similar but the tbi is electronic.
if it is a true carb then it has had an engine swap done probably (at minimun swap from fuel injection to carb)

Would I look for something that is plugged into the carb? if it is electronic? I'll get pics of the engine up today.
