Tach is really off.....

Comparing the tach in the car to the rpms that the ecm is reporting via ALDL, one or the other is VERY off. Idling at 750-800 rpm, my tach shows about 1100 or 1200 rpm. At 2000 rpm, the tach reads 2600. I am assuming the ecm figure is correct, and the tach is wrong. Is there any way to adjust or modify the tachometer so that it reads correctly?

Check this thread, same problem fixed.

Tachs fail all the time on our cars, and always fail by reading higher.

Is there a way to adjust it or compensate for the difference. In other words, fixing it so it reads correctly. Once I get the car dialed in, I don't want to be guessing as to when I need to shift. I also don't want to install an aftermarket tach in the car. I think it looks out of place.

If you have a manual trans, just shift when it stops pulling... thats when you wanna shift anyway.
