Holy cow, I am dumping a quart a day of the new 0-30 syn!!! I need to get this fixed ASAP!
What would you reckon it would cost if i took it to a mechanic, vs. if I did it myself? I don't have a jack or jackstands so I have to figure that into the cost.
Thanks

We just bought a 1969 Chevelle, at a pretty good price because the rear main seal was leaking.
We got the car home and started poking around. The oil pressure sending unit was so loose, I could unscrew it by hand. Now that this problem is taken care of, this 350, with 130,000 original miles, doesn't burn or leak a drop of oil.
Listen to Ede and make sure you know what's leaking.

My money would be on the rear plenum seal. Mine was bad when I bought the car, and I had to dump 5 quarts in it to get home from jersey.

Or spend $16 on a pair of jackstands at the local parts store. A jack is like $40 for a decent one, though they can get quite pricey.
You're going to need that stuff eventually. You can't even work on your brakes or change your oil without those things!
Not only that, but you'll pay that in just one hour of labor at a shop!

How do you know it's the rear main? You need to drop your tranny, so you're going to need more tools than just a jack and jack stands. You're going to need some big *** jackstands too, not the rinky dink 2 ton stuff.
You should find out for sure first, cause it's a bitch if you take it all down and find that it's not the rear main that's leaking.
