Rusty Mold?

So I got a cracked long block from the same guy that I got my 4bolt block from, so I could take out the rotating assembly from it, and practice porting heads from it... well, I took off the oil pan when I got it home, and PHEW that stinks! I turned the motor around on the engine stand and there's what looks like mold, orange mold, growing inside there!

So I started tearing it down, hoping it was just mold, and I could wash it away and all would be well... well, i took out the cam and there was some of it on the cam lobes, which I kinda expected... then I took the heads off and it's all inside the combustion chambers as well, and the pistons are pretty well covered in it (though the pistons are dished, and possibly the right size so I might end up trying to save them too lol).

My question is... has anyone encountered this before with a cracked block? I have no idea what it is, but it seems to just brush off when I shoo it off with my glove (thats one thing I wont put my hands on lol).

I figure someone who has built a few engines in their time would know something about this. I can post pictures, but didnt want to waste bandwidth unless this strikes someone's interest.

I second that notion. This sounds interesting.

no kidding man. It stinks real bad as well, which is another reason I think it's mold. I dont know, I've done a search in many of the forums and havent found anything like this.... Stekman said that it looks like the stuff used in fire extinguishers... I just dont see someone putting a fire extinguisher to this, espescially having to take off the oil pan to shoot it in there, and then shoot it through the intake to get it in the combustion chambers...

Thats what happens when you get coolant in the engine and let it sit for 2 years.

Creeping crud....too late for a doctor. Put it out of it's misery!!

Whatever that stuff is, it kinda looks like it's grown by the pics. Good thing you're not trying to save it, that's all I can say...

Well that solves that... once I get the rotating assembly out of there I'm making a trip to the junkyard with my cracked, moldy, bare block. lol
