Changing trans mount, urgent

I cant get the inner bolt with a ratchet and can't get enough force with a wrench, can I take the crossmember off? or is that a real bad idea? basically is the crossmember holding the trans up?
i'm waiting to go back out on your response

Place a jack with a block of wood under the tranny pan just enough to hold it, and you could drop the x-member. Maybe a jackstand is a better idea if your jack leaks down and you will have it out for a while. The main fear is having it tip down and smashing your distributer cap off the firewall.

You have to jack the tranny up some to free the tranny mount anyways.

Well, the storms just quickly came in before I got much of a chnce to get to it. So I guess it will have to wait till saturday. So what is the best way to do this anyway? Jack up the trans a bit, take off the x-member and replace it?

That's the way I've always done it. Make sure you support the trans from the pan with a piece of wood. If you do it at the tailshaft you will have problems reinstalling the crossmember.
