Which timing chain for Edelbrock Performer Plus cam?

1987 LG4 305. I am installing a Performer Plus camshaft (hydraulic, flat-tappet), lifters and springs. I bought a Cloyes #3023 Timing chain but the cam install instructions say I need the Edelbrock 7802 chain; that other chains are 'retarded'.;-). Will I have to exchange the Cloyes for the Edelbrock? Thanks. Luis

But that is my question..will it fit without having to degree the cam, as the install instructions suggest? I really don't want to find out if it fits or not after I close it up. Has anyone installed the Performer Plus cam with anything other than the Edelbrock timing chain? Thanks./L

It will fit. Timing chains are not dependant upon cams. A Edelbrock chain will bolt up to a cam that is made by a company other than Edelbrock. The likewise is also true. All that matters is that both the cam and the timing set are either pre-roller or factory roller. In your case, both are pre-roller and will bolt up together fine.

Stekman, what do you mean by pre-roller? My '87 does have a roller cam; the new cam is hydraulic flat-tappet (with new lifters, of course). The cam install goes on about their (Edlebrock) timing set being 'straight-up' and not to install the cam retarded.

As for dialing the cam, not sure I want to do this now. I haven't worked on engines for 30 years and it's complicated enough as it is. Is there a way to compensate with timing for anything mucked at the cam factory? How'd you know I'm not sleeping well?

Thanks for the answers./L

Ede, why do you say to stay away from edelbrock? I bought an intake manifold, cam, lifters, springs, and I don't know what else. Did I waste my money?

In the center is the factory roller. The cams on the left and right use the pre-roller face. You can see, where the cam sprocket bolts up, it is a smaller diameter on the factory roller. Aside from that, the 3 bolt holes are also brought closer together on the factory roller. Basically, if the timing sprocket bolts up, you will be ok.

I'm not ede, but I think I know what he's talking about. The edelbrock cams use lazier ramp rates (older cam technology) than the more "up to date" cams produced by the major manufacturers such as Comp Cams, Crane, Lunati, Isky, and Crower.
