Weird Overheating

OK, I've got my suspicions of what's going on but I figured I'd ask the experts. the car has a new water pump, thermostat and coolant.
Nothing is leaking anywhere. The cooling fan turns on around 215 and off around 190 as near as I can tell. On the open road all is fine but let me get stuck in traffic or go through a slow drive thru and the sucker redlines. When I get moving again all is well. Any Ideas!

Its a bad GM design. The fans need to come on sooner in hot temps. Go out and get a Hypertech fan switch. It'll turn them on earlier and leve them on longer. I would also find someone who knows electrical and ask them to wire it so both fans come on at the same time.

Mine stays at 165* with it set up like that along with a 160* stat.

Lotsa luck

Your not alone there bro. I'm having the same sorta problem, but I don't think it's the fans. I noticed my car would get up to red while idleing for a short time and not moving. Well I got out and checked the overflow tank and it wasn't boiling over, hell the coolant in the tank wasn't even warm, or above the hot mark. I'm figuring the coolent temp sender is bad and not reading correctly. I'm going to replace it tommarow, I'll let you know if it takes care of the problem.

PS does anyone know if both front fans kit on at the same time? Or is it one after another? thx

Glad to hear I'm not alone. I only see one cooling fan though. Where's the other? Also, in one case my overflow container did bubble over a bit.

Mine has dual fans in front, instead of one. My 86 had the single fan set up, dont worry man, it does just fine.

Stock "On" temp for the fan(s), A/C OFF, is 228*. The ECM uses a DIFFERENT temp sensor than the one that runs the guage, however.

If you only have one fan get the dual fan unit and use lower temp switches. I got mine from house of Camaro under a $100. No more problem.

I'm aware there are two diifernt sensors. The fan one is in the front of the intake, while the guage on is on the drivers side. But both front fans are supposed to come on t the same time....right? Cause right now I think only one of mine is working. Unless the other one kicks on at a higher temp.

The drivers side fan is the primary, controlled by ecm, and temp switches. The girlfriend side fan is secondary, comes on when A/C head pressure reaches some predetermined point (don't recall just offhand) and engine temp is above something like 230. So the only time you get both fans on is when the A/C is running, and the engine is hot.

My secondary fan runs all the time the key is on. Not entirely sure why..... Seems like it would require two components to fail to do so........

Make certain that your fan(s) is coming on. Sounds like it probably isn't.
