Can't figure this noise out :(
I changed the rockers, changed the lifters, changed the pushrods and I still get this nasty clacking noise. Its very very quite at idle, but very audible the minute it goes past 900 rpm. I recently installed a cc306 and it was running fine for 2 days. Oil pressure is extremely good, 60 psi at cold, 27 at warm, no fluctuaction what so ever. I hear it mostly on the drivers side and I can't figure this out, I thought at first it was the lifters, changed those, changed the pushrods, and now the rockers and its still there. It doesn't sound like a rod because its coming from up top. All the rockers are getting really good oil and it smokes the hell out of my engine bay if im revving it (oil gets on headers). I've had people come by and look at it and they say it sounds like valve train. My father in law said it might be a cam bushing but I don't this LT1's have cam bushings. I havn't driven it since it has happened but when I did I could feel vibration in my clutch pedal. When I pulled the lifters I cleaned my hands and put some oil on them and stuck my fingers in the lifter valley's to check the cam lobes and all felt great to me. Im stumped on this one guys, can someone tell me what is going on?

No, checked the headers also. This sounds like metal hitting metal. There are no metal shavings in the oil either. Nothing wrong with oil pressure. I changed the entire valve train out and I just can't figure this out

I have a similiar problem in my v6. To me it sounds like its is comming from the fuel rail. I'm not sure of what the problem is but I would love to know the answer as well

Yes, found out it was the cam bearings, the bushings on the cam are scratched on the front and back. The cam bearings look extremely copper colored.

Hmm well good thing you found it, hope the oil is in good shape and that you dont have metal anywere in the block, unfortunetly i would recomend a full rebuild
so that u dont get taht stuff worked into the mains and rods, but the bearing replacement isnt too bad on the cam, jsut get an install tool ~60-80 bucks, or maybe able to rent one, kind of pricy for 3 bearings though

Yup, i caught it extremely quick, happened in a parking lot about 1/2 a mile from my house, drove it straight home and it hasn't moved in 2-3 weeks. Like I said, got a brand new block 15,000 mile in the back of my truck that im just gonna swap my top end on to and rebuild the old block into a 383
. Oil had no metal what so ever. The cam bushings are scratched really bad on the front and back. One has a small groove in it. I've been wanting to port my heads anyways

. Just an FYI, I just got a cam remover/installer tool on EBay for $49 shipped. Appears to be a decent quality tool, but it is only fitted for SBC bearings. Should be getting it around wednesday
Any idea on the quality of the bearing sets you can pick up at the parts houses for ~$20?

You have an LT1, so I assume serpentine belt? Take off the belt and check your pullies, you might have something like your waterpump or PS, or even your alternator going out. They usually whine when they go bad, but my alternator clacked and banged like a biatch before it finally gave out. It was just worn out, and the pulley had lots of play in it, and thats where the noise was coming from.

Cam bearings.....wow, that sucks man. Good luck getting it fixed. Are you gonna do more than port those heads and a cam swap while its out? By the way, I wanted to thank you for your help in the post "me versus 69 Mustang", I got a CC306 cam and am working on stroking my engine to a 383 before spring. I want to demolish that mustang!!! Anyways, I'm glad to hear that you found it early, before anything else went wrong.
