Just had a thought related to oxygen sensor placement in headers

Ok, we all know that if your o2 sensor is too far downstream, it may not function properly because it won't heat up. SO, why is it then that the 2.8 cars can function with the sensor a half mile away? On the 2.8 the sensor is AFTER the join in the y-pipe, almost to the cat. It's not a heated sensor. If it works there, why can't it work in the collector of headers? Do headers allow the exhaust to cool off that much? The exhuast travels through more distance in the Y pipe in the 2.8 than it does through the header in the V8.

well I don't know for sure...

but I do know that cast Iron Manifolds help retain heat alot More than a Tubular header, that may have some effect.
