car quits randomly at idle

heres a puzzler for yall...
im looking to buy a 89 RS with a 5 speed (always liked manual). its got the 5.0 tbi (forget the vin letter). I took it out for a test drive yesterday and it all seems solid except it will randomly quit when i take my foot off the gas. when i was slowin down to make a turn i left it in second and just braked...and i just felt the car suddenly slow down. i got back on the gas and i went fine. when i was making another turn i let out the clutch to shift and it died. It starts right back up, and it does not quit as long as your foot is on the gas pedal. when it quits it does not sputter, it just shuts off as if the key had been turned off. The guy said he let it idle for an hour to try to track down where the problem is and it didnt quit. so my question is what could this be? Friend of mine thought it could be the coil (think it has HEI) but why would it do it only when my foot is off the gas? so what are youre thoughts?

Well I was all ready to be an *** and remind you to Put the clutch In when you were trying to idle, but You seem to Have that under Control.

It just shuts off ? Interesting. I really don't have anything helpful to say, sorry

I have an automatic and it has done the same thing since I got it 10 years ago, but it is doesn't happen very often maybe every 4-5 weeks when I come to a stop at a light then it will cut off and will start back up. If you figure it out let me know!

Mine does this too, once and a while. It doens't matter if it's hot or cold.. It's just like I turned the key to off, some times it'll catch it's self and stay running, and on a very rare occasion I can't re-start it right away, it would fire & then quit.. once it wouldn't start for three tries. Then a few weeks later my fuel pump died.. So I thought it was that. So I now have a new pump, and only just recently once and a while it had started to quite again.. So I've gonna check my fuel pressure.. Though the pump in it is a Carter, & they should be a good product.. Does any one else have an Idea?

Well I have a car that joined the club just a few days ago

I am thinking I wanna check out the ignition system, and particularily the pickup coil. In fact, I will probably just ditch that and the module for a new one.

My car did this too when I got it. I took it to a mechanic to have him fix a hesitation problem it was also having... Here's what he did:

1 Cleaned the entire upper intake and flushed out the fuel system.

2 Set the timing (car was running much beter at this point, but then he noticed it still seemed to be only firing 5 at some points)

3 replaced an injector

All that took care of the problem. For you guys though, I'd suggest a tune up, and cleaning out your entire upper intake and pleneum, that should do it. That water trick works wonders too.
