82 Pace Car?

Well I have been looking around town for a decent 3rd Gen to rebuild. I have only been looking a week but today I found a lot with 3. One was a newer RS, but because I was a z28 I did not ask the year/price.

The other two were as follows.

Blue 84 Z28. T-Tops, Automatic. Body fairly straight. Mild rust here and there, No holes. Interior decent but not great. No visible cracks in the dash, console. Aftermarket wheels, only saw one tailpipe (did not look underneath)

Silver/Blue 82 Z28. T-Tops, Stick. Body straight. Little rust here and there, again no visible holes. Interior is nicer in the 84, but this interior is okay. Dual exhaust. Original rims.

Okay they both have the bags for the t-tops. All the GFX are there and in good shape. The 84 looks a little nicer but the locks are yanked out of the doors leaving nice big holds which kinda looks funny. Im assuming they both have the original 305's as I have not looked/asked yet.

The weird thing about the 82 is that in the inside of the dash where the Z28 emblem should be there is an INDY 500 badge. It says INDY 500, then the date followed by 1982.

They are both fairly steep at $2995 for the 84 and $2495 for the 82. Im sure I could talk him down at least $500 for either.

So whats the deal. Is this possibly an official pace car version. Did they even have one in 82? What should I look for and/or watch for with either year. As far as engine problems etc. I want one to rebuild/restore/repair for fun. I dont want it original condition (plan to add 350) unless its a pace car and I could have a collectible.

Thoughts, opinions?
Thanks

1982 was the only year a 3rd Gen Camaro ever was a pace car, so it very well could be. If it had original paint, the car would have had Indy 500 decals on the doors, but I'm assuming it has either been painted, or it is a 82 Z28 w/ a Pace car dash badge. The interior was special also, the seats were a metallic silver and blue. All the ones I've ever seen were Crossfire Fuel injected cars, but I can't say whether all of them were. It may be a true pace car, but if I were you. I'd do some research on it to tell whether it was or wasn't. Anyway, I hope I've helped some, and I'm glad to see someone who wants a 3rd Gen, and is not just settling for one until they can do better like a lot of people who own them. Here's a pic of a 82 Pace Car, maybe it will help, Good Luck.

An '82 Z28 Pace Car doesn't have to have stickers on the doors. Quite often they just came in a box along with the car. They also don't have to have a crossfire engine, many came with the normal LG4 305.

Thank you guys for the replies. I plan on going back down today to ask a little more about the car and take a look at the engine.

The car looks just like the one in that picture. Silver and blue paint with the blue striping down on the bottom just before the GFX. All the interior looked like it belong there but I did not think to take of the color(s). I do believe part of it was silver so I may be in luck. I look at that webpage you sent a link too and some other ones about the 82 Pace Car and read the the CFI one came with AUTO tranny only, while the carbed ones had the option for a Manual. Well this one is indeed a stick so I am going to say its probably carb. I will try to get as much of the guy as I can an hope its all original. If the engine has been changed then Im SOL I guess, but I will still probably pick it up and use it as a base for my project car. I know theres stronger years out there but I gotta start cheap

Thanks for the help.

If I were you, I'd go ahead and throw a 350 into the pace car anyways because it would be nice to drive such a nice thirdgen (the '82 Pace Car) and actually have it fast.

Besides, restoring a car to factory condition is more often that not the most expensive way to do things rather than just upgrading.

Nice find! I'd love to have one...

I had an 82 pace car for awhile. You could either get the carbed or CFI version. The carbed came with a manual and the CFI came with a 200C auto. I had the CFI. The car was nice, not fast by any means, but nice. I put alot of time and money into the car thinking it would be worth it in the long run....didn't turn out that way though. Oh well
