What engine is this?
I cannot find this engine code anywhere. I have looked at list after list, and no luck. I understand that it is a 350 from a 75 pickup, but I want to be sure.
The letters txd mean a truck motor from 75, right? That is all I have been able to find online. I couldn't find it on mortec.com either.
These came off the pad under the alternator. It has passenger side dipstick. Computer controlled q-jet. (some dumb person didn't replace it) Oh yeah, in an 84 Z28.
008103891 V0808TXD
Anyway. The car is being offered to me for free. My Trans/Am needs an engine, so I figure, what the hell.
Is there any potential for this block. I hear they had a high nickel content, is that a good thing?
Thanks

don't know which would be better, probably the 350 though since anything made in 64 would most likely be a 283 or 327 since the 350 didnt come out until 67, Tried lookin up that suffix code for ya too, can't find it, sure ya read it right?

Looks like it's a 350. Beyond that, there's nothing useful in those "codes". Being a truck motor, it likely has 4-bolt main caps on it. Not much of a big deal.
All of that "high nickel" crap you hear about is mostly magazine article monkey-spank. Even as insignificant as it is to a hot-rod type build whether the block got 2-bolt or 4-bolt cpas installed on it, the "nickel" drivel is even less of a factor in the real world.
If you really want to inspect the block and make a useful determination of whether it's worth building or not, look for core shift; measure the thickness of the walls, and see if it will stand boring one more time; see if it has either The Starter Problem, or The Lifter Bore Problem; have it crack checked; etc. etc. etc. etc. After all of that has passed the test, and if you had another block sitting next to it that also passes all the tests and has "even higher nickel", then maybe you might want to use that one instead. Otherwise, that "nickel" business is about at the very bottom of the list of priority as far as what actually makes a difference to a successful outcome.
Beyond that, it's a 30-year-old truck motor, in a 20-year-old Z28. Whatever it is now, probably bears little resemblance to either the original truck motor, or the original Z28; if it's like most such things, it's probably the worst of each, with a few aftermarket rebuilder downgrades thrown in for good measure (like cast chinesium pistons with .025" more deck clearance than the originals).
But, maybe, a good core, to start out a build-up with. Forget the "nickel" and the "codes", and devote your efforts to things that matter, to make that call.

Sounds like one of the smarter things the previous owner(s) did.

I am pretty damn sure that a computer controlled carburetor without the computer, is a dumb idea.
Was there any reason for that comment? What could you have been trying to say there? What do you know about the setup to assume that I am ignorant concerning my comment.
More importantly it is not really your place to act like that. You need to grow up, and get off your high horse.
Not trying to vent, but that was just a little too rude for no particular reason.
Anyway, I am very sure about the stamping. I cleaned the pad behind the alternator very well, and it was well lit. I am confused as to why it would not match or come close to any of the numbers I have looked up.
It doesn't matter really. All I was concerned about was wether or not it was a 350. Thanks
Yeah, about the 64 block, I was tired and not thinking. I am pretty sure that it was a 74. I haven't looked that up in years, so I don't remember. All I really needed to know is that it was pre 86 anyway.
Do you guys know what size heads came on those engines? I don't want to pull the valve cover, because it is not mine yet. I am pretty sure they are still the same ones. I don't think they would be the smog heads, because trucks weren't subject to the regulations until 79 or so, iirc. Maybe not though.
From my later research I have learned that it is an ls-9 block.
I am probably going to just swap it over, unless I decide to keep the z28. It does have nice paint.

here is what the suffix code got me. I guess I answered my own post here, but I am still wondering about the heads.

There's no way to know what's on it, without pulling a valve cover. People could have put anything at all on it. And probably have. It might have double-humps; it might have 87-up swirlies; it might have 267/305 heads; it might even {gasp} have the same heads, or the same type anyway, as a 165 HP (2-barrel) 75 truck would have had, which is either 882 or 624 casting. Which are good for absolutely nothing.
But, since heads can be changed so easily, and often are during a rebuild (turned in as cores and exchanged), you could have almost anything. Except, more than likely, whatever it is, isn't "performance" oriented.

Any reason for my comment? Absolutely. You made a disparaging comment, and without anything else being said, someone poking around the forum might come across this thread and assume anyone who runs a CC carb is dumb - which, of course, isn't true.
No high-horse involved, just the facts presented in a way consistent to the occasion.
As for the heads, you aren't going to get the information you need without pulling the valve covers and getting the casting numbers. Trucks typically got the same smog heads, with smaller valves, and are generally pretty poor for performance applications.

I figure that the heads are crap, but I get to use my 1.94 heads off my T/A.
I just got good news about it today. I get it for free. It is a complete running car with everything, so I just need to figure out what I need off of it.
I have made this list so far. If you guys can think of anything else please let me know asap.
I need the hatch struts
engine
700r4 tranny
maybe the rear springs
the power seats
the center console between the t-tops
The new t-tops it has
the newer carpeting
The drum master cylinder for my 4 wheel disks
door panels
would the steering ratio be better than what I have?
I get a/c again
don't the ground effects fit my 82 t/a? I remember reading something about that a few years ago, but I don't remember what years the gfx will fit.
I don't know what else. The car is near mint, yet still he is junking it. The reasons I will not get into here, but I assure you that everything is prime condition. Besides I am partial to my T/A so I would rather put the parts in it, instead of driving the camaro.
Anything you guys can think of will be appreciated.
five7kid, don't think I am a jerk. No hard feelings here....
thanks guys

hmm, IMHO, that '84 Z sounds in good shape, someone not as bright as RB might jump on that car with a 350 and all... You could probably make some coin out of it, then use that money to buy those parts that you need from a junk yard, then not have to worry about getting rid of a shell/parts car...
I just really like '84Z's, and junking one that sounds alright just breaks my heart...
What is wrong with your current 350? based on the recommendations here so far, it might make more sense to rebuild that one. (you know the condition of yours best right? ) Or just swap a few of the better parts from the Z to your car, then sell it whole...

I don't think the ground fx or the console will really fit; or, at least they won't be right. They're specific to the Camaro or the Bird.
Seats, carpet, springs, T-tops, transmission, will all swap over. That stuff is universal. As long as the carpet is some color that doesn't look stupid in the other car or whatever.
And who knows, maybe the 350 (even if it turns out it's a POS as it sits) might be something you can stash off in the corner and start accumulating better parts for.
Free is good. AC is good.

The rings on my current 350 are blown.
I didn't mean the center console, but the one on the roof, between the t-tops.
I put one in my 82 bird, but the light fixture was broken.
The camaro is going through some family ownership problems, and it was suggested that I take if it would be useful to me. The title exists, but I won't get my hands on it. I can have anything I need from it, but I can't own it. Too bad though, I offered it to my fiance already. She likes thirdgens, how cool is that...
This block is running better than my current one. My engine smokes like a pregnant teenager. Now I can take my time and do things right. Plus I get to repaint my engine bay, and clean the block really nice.
