Engine Stress?
Engine Stress?
Hey, I just have a question about how stock engines fair up with the wear and tear of everyday driving. I recently got an 85 camaro with a rebuilt stock l98 engine swap, and the engine has about 10k on it along with the rebuilt 700r4 (needs a few adjustments). I use it for daily driving most days out of the week, and usually about 10-18 miles per day. The car itself has 142k, and it seems to be running well like a rebuilt motor. (no smoke, no leaks, runs strong, etc). I keep it maintained the best I can doing upkeep because it is driven most days. The weather is mild for the winter, and the summer is quite hot. I mounted a switch for the fan in case the temps get too high in the summer so i can keep it at normal temps. The most I've shifted at is about 5000(tach is probably off), but that's rarely that I run it like that. It seems to be getting about 16-18 mpg on a mix of city/freeway from what I can tell by quick referencing in my head. My question is this too much stress for this engine? Is it causing a lot of wear and tear by it's design by default? How long should this engine run for in this condition of driving? I've never taken it to the track, and I plan on taking it just once to see how it does. I hope I'm not exhuasting it too much. Any opinions?

Almost all engine wear occurs during startup, so limit that and change the oil every 3000 miles and do a tune every 20-30,000 and it will last pretty much forever.
ok, so when i start the car, should I let it idle to warm up, or is it okay to hold it at around 1500 or so to make it warm up quicker? Does it make a difference in stress?
thanks for the help.
