car wont start up... and tranny just gave ?

man i just got the car back a while ago... and it all seemed to work fine but it wouldnt reve past 4500 or 5000 kind of falls flat and makes a weird *** popping sound..THEN the tranny that was just rebuilt just gave out for no reason... it was rebuilt like in januarry.. i was driving perfectly normal too ..THEN yes another THEN... i was watching the car idle then all of a sudden the fuel pressure gaugge went nuts..and it stalled and wouldnt start. i left it alone for a day then cranked her again now she backfires ungodly bad like shooting out of the carb and the fuel pressure gauge is DEAD liek at 1 ??!?? what is wrong with this car.. i spent like 9000 on this thing total and now it still isnt running right.. its for sale now for $2800 unless i can get it to work..

somebody please help

Solve your fuel pressure problem first, that is probably the whole problem. $2800 for a $9000 car with a bad fuel pump, I'll take it. Question, in '91 your car would have been fuel injected. How did you handle the old fuel pump? You can't simply regulate down the 40-50psi of pressure to 5-9psi for a carb. The stress on the fuel pump will cause it to fail quickly and is likely to destroy any pressure regulators you use. If you removed the old fuel pump and switched to a new low pressure one check it out. Sounds like its just barely moving fuel now. Maybe the bypass valve stuck open. If the engine has just a squirt of fuel it can backfire. Seems strange but it can happen. Most importantly you need to explain how fuel gets from your gas tank to your carb.

The lack of fuel pressure means the engine doesn't have enough gas to run properly... especially at 4000+ rpm. The backfiring through the carb is caused by bad timing when the car is stalling.

Put in a decent fuel pump and check your timing. The tranny... warranty?
