when buying main and rod bearings, how many do need

I need to order a new set of main and rod bearings and this may seem like a dumb question but how many do I need? The rod bearings are sold each and Im thinking that I would need 8 correct. Now the main bearing are sold in sets of 5, do I just need one set? why wouldnt summit just sell the rod bearing in a kit instaed of each.

you need the same number of rod bearings as the number of rods you have ( since you nevert said), the mains are sold in sets for your engine.

Kits are probably available but if I spin one bearing and catch it in time, I only need to change that one not all of them. I buy mine at the local speed shop and they're all in a set. Set of mains and a set of rods.

Lots of choices too. My rods have a dowl pin to keep the bearing from spinning (aluminum rods). I also use a chamfered bearing because of the crankshaft design. My crank has been turned 10/10 so they're all undersized bearings.

Other than that I only buy Clevite 77 bearings.

I spun a main bearing last year. Had to get the crank repaired. The block needed a new bearing cap and had to be line honed again. All the bearings were contaminated. There was no indication of a failure except a gradual loss of power and oil pressure was dropping. Most of the bearing material was trapped in the lifter valley because of the screens I have covering the drainback holes.

I'm to the point now where every winter the engine comes out and gets new bearings and rings.

stephen i'm suprised you run clevites. i gave up on them after buying a set for a BBC that were unusable. any more it's FM for gernal rebuilds and C&A for preformance applications.

You're surprised Ed? That "I spun a bearing" part removed all doubt here.

Clevite = Crap.

Is there any recommendations for a specific bearing on a moderate performance build? I'm planning on putting out around 420hp and eventully a 150 shot spinning to 6200. Stock sized crank but should I use Bi-Metal, full groove, chamfered etc???

Scat 9000 crank and Eagle 4340 H-Beams.

TIA

Federal Mogul 4663M main bearings, 2555CP rod bearings, and 1235M cam bearings should do fine.

I used summit brand bearings, hard to beat the price there.

Mwnova thinks they are made by "King", and therefore that's a good thing....

I wrecked them all, and i'm buying new ones of them... (wrecked due to flat cam, so I can't blame the bearings, if anyone was going to mention that..)

Might want to mention that due to their softness your bearings saved your crank journals from damage when all that trash went through your oil.
