Engine stalling/dies when moving from park to reverse

Hi All,

I have a 1992 Camaro Z28 with a 5.7 and 41,000 miles on it. The problem I have is that sometimes, when I shift from park to reverse, the car stalls (the rev goes down), and the engine dies. I start it back up and everything is fine again. The engine stalling isue happens about once in every 5 starts.

Another thing I notice is that sometimes this instrument notice light comes on called "INFL REST", and I can't find anything on this in the car manual.

Could it be an O2 sensor or possibly a distributor/pickup coil going bad? That's my theory based on what I've read from other posts.

If anyone could please help I'd really appreciate. It's so embarassing to see it stall when I pull out of a parking lot.

'92,

"INFL REST" is the supplemental inflatable restraint system arming (air bag, or SIR for short). It really is incidental to the engine stalling and shouldn't have any bearing on the problem.

Typically the O2 isn't even active untila a couple of minutes after the engine has been running. I would guess that you have problems with the IAC system, such as a dirty throttle body or sticky IAC stepper motor.

Clean the throttle body and IAC with 02 sensor safe carb cleaner. It needs to be done once a year for optimal performance.

If it hasn't been done in a while its worth taking the upper plenum and runners off and cleaning the whole thing out.
