Timing chain install

Sorry for the crude picture my digital camera doesnt seem to want to work. Im trying to get my timing chain installed correctly but cant seem to do it and have the markings on the Cloyes timing set to line up perfect. Its either 1/2 a tooth one way or half a tooth the other. I cant get it perfect or maybe this is just the way the Cloyes set is?? I just want to know if this is gonna be ok or not. Thanks

Kris

though I am no expert. That setup looks to be like it would fit just fine. If you turn the crank sprocket counter clockwise just a little, and then the cam sprocket clockwise just a little then the marks line up just perfectly.

DO NOT assemble it that way. Rotate the crankshaft and position the camshaft as necessary to achieve this kind of alignment:

When you have multiple keyways like that you want the keyway with the circle above it at the 1 o'clock position. Then the other circle at the 12 o'clock positon directly in line with the dot on the cam sprocket.

Same applies with the rectangle if you wanted 4 degrees retard. The triangle is for 4 degrees advanced.

Did you mean like the one in the photo? If you look closely, you'll notice that it is a "three-way" timing set as well.

Me? Yes the one in the pic is perfect for straight up. I only mentioned the retard/advanced just in case someone else may find the info useful. Folks like myself like every detail they can get hold of. I would imagine Chris has a good understanding of how it works now.

How did you make out Chris?

after you install it dot to dot spin it a few times to make sure everything works then set it with both dots up, which would be firing on #1

You got it!

Sorry for butchering the spelling of your name. For someone who likes attention to detail, I should know better!

So does that look right? I never had a problem with the stock chain. The reason Im doing the chain is that I could only pull 8" of vacuum with a cam that Comp Cams said will pull about 15". My vacuum issues began after my cam swap. I sent the HSR out and found out the base wash warped 0.004" which is now fixed. Since I had to replace the timing cover gasket due to a leak..I pulled the cam and sent it to be spec'd and it check out too. Now I want to make sure that everything is gonna be done right. Im basically just eliminating all possibilities. If the valve timing was off say a tooth or 2...would that result in vacuum issues?. Thanks

That looks right. Did the dots line up on your old setup? I suppose you would have all kinds of issues if the chain jumped a tooth. It would run like crap and a good chance a valve would be kissing a piston. You would certainly know about that.

As far a vacuum issues go, could be the intake is not sealed perfectly or a vaccum leak in a line ect. After she is all buttoned up and running again, check everthing over carefully.

Expanding on what Ede said, you can set it to both dots straight up, or just leave it dot to dot and make the distributor rotor point to 6 instead of 1 (while still following the normal firing order).
