305 upgrades

I have my "beater" L69 that I autocross and generally run the crap out of. It dyno'd right on the factory numbers after freshening up. (new rings, bearing, oil pump cam & timing chain)
I might have picked up 10 lbs of torque but then again, maybe it was just a good day.
So I installed the Edelbrock performer intake, Edelbrock TES headers and a set of 305 vortec heads. A Mallory race type HEI and a Jet performance Q-jet. along with a set of 1.6 roller tip rockers with the vortec heads were also added.

1. Edelbrock intake: A no-brainer installation since the heads were off and I was going to a set of vortecs. this intake pulls to 6grand, which this motor will probably never see, but I can use it on a future 350. (approx cost $180)
2. 305 Vortec heads: Always, always, always check for pushrod to guide clearance on heads. Especially with 1.6 rockers. Since Vortecs use self aligning rockers the easy way is to just run a 1/2 drill through the pushrod hole and your problems will be solved.
(approx cost $200)
3. JET performance q-jet: I was really concerned about this item since there was some bad press on JET lately, so I followed my own advice. I called JET directly and told them the application. They built a carb for my car and I've been very happy with it. I would suggest to anyone buying a new carb to get the factory recomendations before buying a carb from anywhere. this carb was a little more expensive that one from a mailorder house, but was well worth it to me since I can still run my L69 cold air package. (approx cost w/shipping $400)
4.Mallory distrubutor: I got the "race" version w/o the vac advance. The weights come fixed but they aslo come with enough parts and recomendations to make them moveable. I followed their instructions. I originally bought this dizzy to use while my stock HEI was out being recurved, but I liked it so much that I never took it out. (approx cost $150.00)
5. Edelbrock TES headers: I was very happy with these, they are high quality coated headers that actually fit. Being shorties, I'm sure the performance isn't as much as the long tubes, but I didn't want to deal with the ground clearance issues (autocross. lowerred car, remember). I removed the old exhaust , spark plugs, sending units, and jacked the driver's side motor mount up about an inch and in they went. The only 2 things that I didn't like was that on the passenger side they came awfully close to the fuel line (which I moved) and the dipstick tube holder is a little hokey. All, and I mean ALL of the little spacers, long bolts and other crap that you have to scrounge up were included, including a decent set of gaskets. (approx cost w/shipping $450)

So there's a quick way to hammer $1400 bucks on your car. The good news is that the little turdhopper 305 is really running stronger than ever, and the difference is night and day, plus everything will transfer to a 350 (except the heads).I'll try to get in on the dyno in a couple of weeks.

They would actually bolt up, but they have smaller valves along with a smaller combustion chamber. They could be made to work with dished pistons though.

Supposedly they're a step up from the 416's which were on the car. It's a T5 and a 3.73 posi.

I don't have the cam specs in front of me, I'll get them.

Vortec 305 heads flow better than the 416s or 601s and even 081s. They only flow about 15 cfm less on the intake and the same on the exhaust as the 350 vortecs.

Turdhopper indeed.

Is there a dyno in this car's future? I'd be curious about your numbers/improvement.

Do some porting and pollishing on the 416's and they will flow just as well as the vortec's for half the price. read all the threads in here on the possiblitys of the 416's. Just my

he's talking about straight from the factory though. and a set of 305 vortec heads from the junkyard will cost the same as the 416 heads from the junkyard, and will require the same amount of machine prep work to put on a new motor, and will cost the same. there are no 305 vortec aftermarket heads.
