Shift points on a T5

What RPMs should I shift at? My mechanic told me that 3000-3500rpm is too fast?

Is there any documentation from GM or B/W I can use to back up my claim?

Its a 1986 V6 Sport Couple with a T5

1500 - 2500 for normal driving. I wouldn't go that high unless I needed power or was racing. These engines are capable of high shifts, but in stock form don't like to do so.

Sorry, i should have provided more details. I had a rebuilt tranmission put in 6 months ago. A month later, it started making weird noises (grinds almost) going to gear, and would not stop until I complete came off the clutch pedal. Anyway, we tried things like throwout bearings and even a new clutch, but finally he just sent the tranny back to the place he got it, they said the synchronizers were chewed up, and my shift points of 3000-3500 were too high.

Now im not being charged for any of this work, they put in new synchros for free. He even told me he called 2 other shops because he thought they were bull****ing him.

I have no problem changing where i shift, but i would like some formal documentation that i can point to, incase i have any more problems.

I don't think I've ever heard of tansmission vs. RPM shift points as a cause for early failure...assuming you're cruising and shifting as you would in "non-racing" mode.

Failure, IMO, would be more apt to occur is HOW you shift, as opposed to WHEN you shift.

That's a cop-out if I ever heard one for lousy work or lousy parts. My T5 is on it's 4th or 5th year of hard driving. Hard driving meaning frequent 5250 rpm shifts being done very quickly.

Besides, high rpms don't make any difference in the world to the synchros, only big differences in input shaft and trans rpm would. You'd only get that if you had the clutch out and coasting at high speed with the engine at idle, and then went straight into a gear that would be at a high rpm. (I'm not sure if I made much sense there...)
