I know this should probably be in some other section but i figured i'd get a quicker response here...anyway, i recently got my check engine light and i went to pull the codes and i got 12 (No reference pulses to electronic control mudule) and 42 (Fault at electronic spark timing circuit;fault at direct ignition system OR fault at fuel cutoff relay circuit)...what the hell do these mean? I'd appreciate quick help, thanx for any help u guys can give me

the 42 code or est is an electronic spark control it controls the ignition spark advance. on my 92 there is a black and tan wire with a single connector. if the timing is changed this must be disconnected then reconnected after the timing is set and the engine shut off. if someone reset your timing and didn't hook this back up it will give a 42 code. the 12 code shows every tiime you bridge the A and B diagnostic posts to check for codes. there's a ECM disconnect plug on the passenger side close to the + battery terminal. you can either disconnect that or the + battery cable to clear the codes.

Agreed. Every time you disconnect the EST BP wire to set timing and don't short the A and B terminals of the ALDL, you'll get code 42 stored. Disconnect the battery for 30 seconds to a minute to clear the codes and check again. You should just get 12.

Next time you set timing, disconnect the wire AND short A and B on the ALDL. Those are the proper procedures in setting time.

Hmm, very interesting except for the fact that no one has touched my timing since i've had the car which is why i'm perplexed as to why i'm getting a 42 all of a sudden. I'll try resetting the computer again and see what happends, gracias for the quick responses.

I have had this problem with my new buildup. You can go to Autozone and tell them you need a code 42 check off sheet and it will give you steps to go through........I will tell you it can come back to a bad Dist controll module, Pickup coil or Ecm
