What is required for a higher reving engine?

I'm building up a L98 and I was wondering what I can do to get the engine to rev up to like 6000 without it trying to tear itself apart?

Thanks

Jim

Any engine can rev to 6000. Only the cam will determine if it's worth going that high. The powerband of the camshaft is what determines how high an engine has to rev.

Once you know how high the engine has to rev, then you determine what other parts are required. Valve springs, rod bolts, torque converter etc.

You'll have to change the induction system. A L98 TPI system won't flow enough air for a 6000 rpm engine.

Sorry, I should have listed the stuff I have now:

compcams xtreame energy cam w/ following specs 230/236 duration @.05", gross valve lift: .480/.490, and a LSA of 110.

compcams springs, lifters, and hardend pushrods.

TCI break away converter w/stall speed 1000 above stock.

As far as the intake goes:

AS&M SSLTR
Ported plenum
52mm TB
TPIS base port matched
ported stock heads

thanks again

You should be making power upto 6,200 RPM and require the higher stall cam. The stock TPI is choking everything. Either get a miniram or some SLP runners and start porting. A 52mm throttle body helps. Check out what madmax did with his intake. That should support the air requirements no prob... Also better heads would really help... or a good pocket port and 3 angle.

What rear gears you running?

I'm running 3.23 gears. As far as the intake goes I think it should breathe pretty well, the only possible restriction that I can see would be the heads.

Joel,
what did you mean by requiring a higher stall cam? did you mean torque converter?

With regards to the madmax porting job. I would do that with a stock base but I really don't want to mess with a $500 intake base. I;m too scared of f'ing it up.

what I was worried about is reving to high and damaging the engine. I put my friends 91 z up to about 6000 and it sounded like it was going to tear itself apart . That had to be the worst sound I have ever heard. I have dumped alot of money into this engine so far and I really don't want to do that to mine.

thanks again
Jim

so do you guys think this engine will stand up to making runs near 6000 or 6500 RMS's?

My bad, yeah I meant torque converter...

With a little work on a stock TPI ditching the stock runners, 6000 isn't unrealistic. I shift @ a hair over 6,000.
