harmonic balencer question

so i got the motor in my car last summer from a junkyard and it never had a timing pointer on it (and im not sure what the hell it came out of), so i threw it together and guessed when i first built it. now that i have time over the winter to do things right i decided to pull my balencer off and measure it to order a new pointer. so i pull it off and i measure 6 and 3/4" of an inch, so i go over to my trusty summit racing catalog only to find they dont make a pointer for a 6 and 3/4" balencer, only 6, 6 1/4, 6 3/8, 6.6 and 7. is 6.6 close enough? or should i find a company that makes one?

or am i retarded and did i measure wrong? please help me out

-Adam

PS i just checked and summit makes and sells a 6 and 3/4 inch balencer so im probably going to call and ask them about it but until then anyone got any imput?

Most of them cheap pointers are wrong anyway. I had 1 with the right damper and it was 3* off.

What I done one engine, was JB welded a bent out paper clip to the timing chain cover in the right place

On my last engine (one in my 88 camaro now), I took a cheap chrome bolt on one, and marked it for ture TDC and cut the tab to a point.

You'll need to find ture TDC with a piston stop to do that. Then just make you a dot on the timing cover or cheap tab in line with the hash mark on the damper, then cut or put a pointer on that dot you made, now you know for sure where true TDC is

When I had a stock damper, I bought one of the $20 degreed proform damper covers, so I would have timing marks alittle around, not just 18* or so like the tabs has

Then I bought a PP 6.75" damper and it is degreed

onebad82z... Yep Professional Products.

I like it. It's a well made damper. Solid bonded outter hub, full timing marks, good balance to it.

IMO one of the best buys for the buck when it comes to better aftermarket dampers
