octane gas for 82 Firebird Trans Am

Hello. I have a 1982 federal firebird trans am with a 4-barrel carbuerater. I live in California. It has the stock 8.6 to 1 compression ratio. I was curious as to what type of gasoline I should put in it(87, 89, or 91 octane gas? I want performance, so is it true that the higher octane rating would be better for my car?

Thanks................Eric
