Alternator Question

SOme folks have suggested I get my alternator checked out, since I am getting a code 53 in my GTA. My question is : What would the test show other than the usual 13 or so volts coming out? When I run my car the volts guage in the car says 13 or so, which is normal. So what good will having it tested do me ? Would the tester be able to see minute high voltage spikes that don't show up on my dash voltage guage ? Is there some good info I chould be getting from the test readout ?

Thanks

There's more than just voltage. There's also amperage. My "new" alternator showed about 10 volts, so I had it tested, and it was reading .5 amps. Yes, .5.
Normal is 105.

Don't trust the gauges. Besides, it's free anyways.
