Alright I've heard alot of talk on this subject. I am most likely buying elderbrock with K&N filter, but I am not sure as to which size to get to replace my stock filter. A good part number refrence or link would be even better. What are some pointers when chosing??

I think you should just go ahead and buy the k&n air cleaner, since you're not using the edelbrock filter anyways. if you have the stock hood, I would go with the 2 1/4 by 14 clearner.

 

The stock hood over an LO3 TBI will fit a 14X3 filter (non-drop base) no problem. You might want to check out http://www.ramairbox.com I might be changing from my open element to their setup in the near future.

14X3 non drop and toss that 1" spacer between TBI and stock airfilter. Just will fit under hood.

 

the problem you are going to find with doing it that way is that if you remove the spacer you will not be able to get the 14x3 open element on, without it hitting the distributor/coil. I have to keep it on otherwise it is not raised enough to properly seat. I do however suggest putting a gasket below the spacer or something to keep it firm to the TBI. That way it is all induction and no waste.

 

Think I'll go with 14 by 2 1/4 juss to be on a safe side. Thanks guys

there is a small sensor attached to the bottom of the stock air cleaner. I believe it's a air temperature sensor. you can remount it in the knock out plug of your open element or just make sure it's plugged in and not interfering with anything. I had to put a new hole in my 9" because the K&N filter was just a bit thicker than the stock filter that came with the Mr. Gasket filter unit. The K&N number is E-3500. 9"by 3" w/ 7"inside diameter. $38.00 for the K&N $11.95 for the 9" Mr. Gasket unit. the car will throw trouble codes and not run well at all w/o that sensor plugged in.

I replaced my stock unit with a 14" Mr. Gasket non-drop aircleaner and used a 14x3 Accel air cleaner and it works great on my 88' Firebird 305 TBI. My only problem is the breather filter right now is looking pretty crappy(stock pipe with stock breather filter)and I want to put a seperate breather filter on my valve cover but the pipe is stuck on the valve cover. Is there any trick to geting the pipe and gromet off the valve cover with out breaking them and having the bottom half of the pipe and gromet falling into my engine? And what size breather filter do I need to work on my stock valve cover? Thanks for the help.

At the risk of sounding like a follower, Im with madmax. Theres no need for attitude. Theres people of all different skill levels around here. Don't feel bad. It's just the type of humor you have that can be easily taken the wrong way. I kinda have the same sense of humor. Not quite that harsh, but I can tell when you're joking. Maybe if you just tried answering the questions first, then throw in a joke that doesn't contain the words "stupid", "jerk", or "duh", then it wouldn't be taken the wrong way.

I can tell you that I'm on the other page. I try and help people on here, then some other "know it all" (I dunno who )comes along and tells me I'm a moron, or stupid, and it ticks me off. AT LEAST I TRY AND HELP!!!! Isn't that what we go to this site for? To help and be helped?

"Well why don't you just do it this way?" is a response I get a lot. Obviously I didn't think of it that way, or don't know enough about it to think of any other way. If I did, I wouldn't need to ask, or I wouldn't tell another guy that I'm not 100% sure.

for TBI, do not get Edelbrock. All the ones I found are drop base. Get a flat base one like a Mr. Gasket or a P.A.W. brand one like I did or similar non-drop base. http://www.pawinc.com/ I used paper filters until I decided what size was good FOR ME. Once I did, I got a K&N for it.

I just opend this thread, I just *knew* there was more to it than an open element discussion

 

If you use a flat base air cleaner you can get rid of the air cleaner spacer. This way, the incoming air can come in from the sides of the injectors rather than having to come straight down and around 'em. The flat bottom air cleaner will do the most good if you grind down the ridges around the throttle bores.

No, you didnt step on my toes, in fact if you did I could care less, I am just looking out for others. A few of your replies were uncalled for, and it seems you are aware of that, so I guess the issue is cleared up.

Ditch the spacer ring on that TBI.

BTW, you really should take your name and phone number off that post up there, no telling what some people might do with that information.
