Still don't know which rockers to get...help
Ok I need some p/n's here. I want either 1.5 or 1.52 rockers for my car that are roller tips. I don't need self aligning because I have guide plates and I don't want to spend a fortune. I would also like to not have to modify the centerbolt valve covers. Please help I need to order soon.

If you want roller-tip, not necessarily full roller, use Comp 1412s.
I don't know of any roller-trunnion rockers that will for sure go under all stock vlave covers.

I've seen and read the Crane Gold series will fit. I know they advertise the self aligning ones, so I assume that the regular ones will also. But they aren't cheap. I think like $300 for a set. They're the ones that GM used on the LT4, so I'd say that they're strong.
Are the Comp 1412s the Magnums? I've been interested in those because they seem like a good middle-of-the-road option. Anyone have them? Good luck with them?

I have a set of their 1.6 brothers (1416) that has run over 100,000 miles... I doubt any aluminum rockers will ever do that... I don't know what Paul is doing with his car, but if he wants to drive it a whole motor lifetime on the street, steel is the way to go.

The roller tips arn't going to help alot since 99% of the advantage of a roller rocker is in the trunion. Actually some of the roller rockers are going to a 'radius' or fixed tip since there's little friction on the tip anyway... You would be better off cash-wise getting plain stamped long slot rockers with grooved pivot ***** in a 1.6 ratio.

I'm pretty sure the 1412's are the Magnums...and they are the standard (non-self aligning) ones. I think this is what I'll get unless someone else convinces me before tomorrow night not to.

I figured as much about the roller tip part. I just know that the quality of steel that CompCams uses helps keep symmetry in the alignment of the parts from less deflection. I can't imagine that the roller tips would hurt though, right? Better safe than sorry. They may not help a ton, but they gotta at least reduce friction to the point of less heat on the valve tips. Even that is a plus.
Not trying to post an argument, but you can't say that roller tips don't help at all. Just maybe not as much as you'd think, that's all.

I believe that in jeg's or Summit, you can order a set of 8 1.5 and 8 1.6 rollers. In my opinon that is the way to go. I was reading a book called modifying small block chevy valvetrains, and in this book it states that the roller rockers are worth about 10 hp if the same ratio (due to less friction and better ratio accuracy compared to stock) and are worth about 15-20hp if a higher ratio is used( 1.6:1)
----(these figures are on a stock cam with stock heads--- if other variables are present number will be different)----
It then goes on to state that if a dual pattern cam is used and ported stock heads or upgraded heads are used the best gains are shown through 1.5:1 rockers on the exhause and 1.6:1 on the intake
---(I figure this is stated with little or no exhause back pressure)---
This is what the book says, I have no real world experience with this and if someone does please confirm my reply, thank you

the 1417 is the one your looking for in comp cams. the roller tip saves alot of wear and heat from the valve tip. of course there are other brands, but that's the best roller tip set up out there.

I have the Crane Gold series narrow body 1.6 roller rockers (got them from a friend unused for a good deal otherwise not sure if I'd have spent the $$$ on them) and they fit under my stock valve covers with no problems. My TFS heads came with a raised deck height (.1") for the valve covers to give more room for large aftermarket rockers but I had these on a stock headed car as well with no problems with valve cover clearance.
I would suggest getting some cast aluminum valve covers if you go with full roller rockers as they get a bit noisey at times and the thicker aluminum is much better at keeping the rocker noise down.
