I've got an Accel Super Coil on my 355 right now and I'm soon going to be adding a MSD Digital 6 (for the start retard, the nitrous retard, the rev-limiter, and the spark increase)

I have a stock module in there now. Should I think about getting a matching Accel module and if I should, am I looking at more power, more efficency, better spark, what? Never really read anything about them.

I believe you might get some higher RPM response out of them; don't know if they're more streetworthy or not. FYI, Holley also makes a module... hunt 'em down at http://www.holley.com under their Annihilator ignition systems, then under Parts & Accessories. Ah heck, here's the "Parts & Accessories" link- scroll down until you hit the 891-101 thru 891-103. I'm not sure what #891-104 is for...

it's a good idea to get the ignition module that matches your coil. there's an article on that in the new super chevy.

 

Yea, I read that and that's what got me thinking about it.

 

Yeah I have the accel coil on my car too, and I've only gone through 3 stock ignition modules, so I opted for the accel module myself.

I too have now encountered this problem. I am using a MSD Digital 6 Plus ignition box, Accel Supercoil on a MSD 8366 Pro-billet distributor and I have eaten three stock AC Delco ICMs.
They will go out without warning leaving me with a no start condition and sometimes shut the car off as if you were to just turn the key off in the middle of driving.

Now I keep hearing of matching the IC module to the brand of ignition coil being paramount to success.

Can someone that has had this problem advise me of their experience??

The absolute best ignition module is the FACTORT one (AC Delco).

All the rest will leave you at the side of the road. I have tried Accel, Holley and MANY parts store pass-off's.

 

The AC Delco is my problem, unless there is something else going on that I am not aware of. I have successfully toasted 3 of them with nothing more than my Accel Supercoil on the car.

I know that it is a heat problem under the cap that we have with our cars and it seems that just about everyone at some point in time has had to deal with a ignition module that kept blowing up on them.

I think it is time to face the music, if you don't have the problem now, eventually you will.

There are a couple of solutions -proposed- as they may be,

1. Explore the possibility that the ignition control module be of the same brand/make of the ignition coil; be it Accel, Holley, MSD, etc.

2. Pursue alternate means of cooling the ICM. The following links are a excellent idea of one person's pursuit and according to him, he toasted 3 ICMs, one of which were accel's, after which he added this and he didn't toast another one.

3. Relocate the ICM altogether to keep it away from under cap torture.

i'm pretty sure if you are having a problem with the module there is a way to bypass and have your ignition box run it i believe

 

I don't think that is a possibility with the 89 is it??

If so, can someone confirm/deny that??

the msd should replace the module altogether

 

You "can" do it

look through summit, they offer a wiring harness and how to bypass the module and just use the box as the module

 

I just talked to Summit Racing and they told me that it could be done on the Big HEI distributor but it wasn't possible on the small cap HEI.

No dice.

Can anyone give a definite solution as to prevent smoking these modules??
