Engine died during WOT..now won't idle

Hello,

I went for a full throttle blast.... during the "blast" the car cut completely out..... felt like I was out of fuel.... When I finally got it restarted on the side of the road.."felt embarrassed.... all the people I flew by where laughing" It would barely idle.... I had to limp it home... it wouln't take any throttle...BUT when i kept it in second.......and the RPMS came up to 2000 THE CAR RAN PERFECT!!!.... soo I punched it ....and it kept backfiring through the carb....

Got the car home... idles lower and sounds differently......lower tone............... barely runs until I hit 2000 .... then IT RUNS PERFECT.. until I hit aout 3500... then it runs like garbage ...if I give it full throttle ...it just shoots 2-3 foot flames out of the carb.....

I do have some good news...... I don't need to shave or get a hair cut for awhile......

350... 416 ported heads.. 3310 vac sec carb Holley fuel pump mech. 230/230 4.88 cam............... etc...

Accel coil

No broken springs or anything out of the ordinary....

Can't drive...

Any help would be awsome... thank you,

Rob..

Do a compression test.

great so we just covered everything. Im thinking ignition isnt it because its idling lower, and I dont think its fuel related because two sets of rpms are affected, and the fact that you say the tone is different is scary unless its just because of the lower idle. I think it sounds like valvetrain. Check all your spark plugs for some abnormal colors or wetness or oil!!. A compression test is easy to do if that checks out ok. So is taking off the valve covers. You didnt say if there were any strange noises coming from the motor. I cant believe more people dont have a response to this.

That's what I was thinking too... backfiring is typically a timing problem, and distributors dont just "turn themselves" typically (though there have been some cases where they wont stay set, but we wont go there).

Check your timing before you do anything though...
