Starter problems. Quick Question?

I went to go start my car just a little while ago and nothing happened no clicking at all, nothing. Well I turned the key back and forth a few times and the thing finally started. Well when I did that something sparked. I had someone looking in the engine when I did the turning back and forth. What would have caused the spark and do you think if it came from the starter is it fried?

Also I have a really crazy question. I dont know a ton about cars so I am going to ask. Would the starter play any part at all on the alternator or charging system of our cars? I know that is kinda weird to ask but I am just curious thats all. Thanks for the help.

May have a bad connection on the starter and that caused it to spark or start hard.. the starter has nothing to do with the charging system. The starter gets power only from the battery, after the engine starts it doesn't do anything, and neither does the battery.
