strong fuel smell, where's it coming from?

I just ahd a tuneup and the mechanic told me he tuned it to run a little rich, and i just changed the fuel filter. I'm thinking that maybe it's a combination of an under tightened fuel filter nut and the richly adjusted carb. does anyone have any other ideas? I can smell gas from about 10 feet away from my car, but there's no visible leaks on the ground so I'm gonna back out the fuel filter nut and apply some teflon tape and try to thread it back in as well as clean the area where a small ammount of gas dripped when I replaced the filter.

You shouldn't need teflon tape on the fuel filter threads. They are o-ringed. Possible one of the o-rings got cut? or just old and compressed (I always change them when I change the filter, but they don't come with the new filter)

Another possibility is a bad rubber line near the gas tank or fuel pump, or the pump itself.

No teflon tape required on any of that. Don't bother. The threads aren't what's supposed to seal.

The fuel line neck coming out of the gas tank has been known to get small leaks too.

JoelOl75 nailed it, it was the fuel filter o-ring. it was leaking from there pretty bad, replaced it and no more leaks. I sniffed around teh charcoal canister and didn't smell anything in that area, I think it was just the gas leaking out of the fuel filter housing. Thanks again!
