Step seven Cry.
The first thing you need to do is remove the intake manifold. This would consist of the carburator, distributor, and the actual intake manifold itself. Be sure to remember where you took vacuum likes from, and remember the firing order on the distributor(18436572?). After you have the top off, you need to remove your exhaust manifold, and sparkplugs. Then remove your valvecover, loosen up your rockers, and remove your pushrods. Now your ready to loosen the head. THere is a specific bolt sequence you need to follow in order to not warp the head. You can probably find this sequence somewhere on the internet, but if you can't, i know its in most automotove repair manuals. Once the head is off, clean the surfaces with something like rubing alcohol or acitone. Put on new head gasket. instal head using correct tightening sequence, reinstal itake, distributor and reconnect spark plug wires. That should be it. Be sure you set your timing. anybody else feel free to add in!

Gained 20HP by porting and polishing my EGR passage.(some people take this seriously)
All work done by myself, and proud of it!
Find a .bin on the internet and want it burned? I'll do it for you!

If the gasket sticks to the head be vary careful not scratch the head when scraping it clean. If you feel confident in your scraping use a steel scraper. Else use a 3M pad that is safe on steel. They sell some that can be used with a drill. Check the head and deck to make sure they're flat or you're going to blow another gasket. When scraping the deck use paper towels or a blanket or something to cover the valley so you don't get a bunch of crap down in there. Do the same for the cylinders. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!! -> Make sure you have the gasket right side up when installing the head. When you put the intake manifold back on, use a very small amount of black silicone around the ports to seal them, plus it make the gasket stick. This is the tricky part. Use about a 1/4 inch bead on the front and back of the manifold instead of gaskets because they won't seal. Don't use too much silicone so that it leaks into the lifter valley. Use just a little more on the corners for a good seal. When installing your rockers, put all the nuts on the same amount of threads(about two). It's better to count threads before removing. Start the engine with the valve covers off. This will make a mess, live with it. The valves should be making some noise. Tighten them down a quarter turn at a time until they quit clacking. Then one at a time loosen them until they start to make noise, then tighten them until they quit plus one quarter turn. Now your hydraulic lifters should be properly adjusted. Turn off engine and install valve covers. If you use cork gaskets, you might want to use some silicone here too. If you use rubber you'll be fine without. I also recomend replacing the valve seals while you have the heads off. Good luck.

There is a specific sequence for loosening the bolts on the head? I'm assuming this is just the reverse of how you tighten them right? The Haynes manual doesn't mention this at all.
