Depends what's wrong. New piston, resized rod and a bearing. Cylinder deglazing, new rings for the piston. You can keep adding to the list until you know exactly what's needed. Also required is a gasket set since the head has to come off.

It's hard to give an estimate for repairs of an internal problem until it's torn down to see exactly what needs to be fixed. For what it's worth, it's better to just drop in a new engine that way everything is done.

i'd suspect your mechanic has no idea what the problem is and is trying to sell you another engine that would fix your problem, whatever it might be.

I agree. And I'll add to that, if your mechanic gave you a diagnosis of a rist pin problem, it was at best an educated guess. There's probably some mechanical noise coming from your block, and any way you slice it, it's going to involve taking your engine out to repair it. Or even to pinpoint what the problem actually is.
If there's a loud knock coming from your block, it might be repairable, but probably not without a rebuild.

Be interesting to know how many cars and motors the d00d has been through since he asked about this.
