timing chain pissing me off
timing chain pissing me off
Okay Im installing a new cam, cam is in and the crank gear is on. How am I supposed to get the cam gear and the timing chain installed the right way? I have it so that the two dots match up on the bottom of the cam gear and top of the crank gear because the motor has #1 at tdc. No matter how I do it, I can't get the cam gear on with the chain around the crank gear, the cam gear will never bolt on the cam the right way. Is there some trick to doing this?

Then your #1 isn't quite exactly at TDC.
Move the crank slightly, until it works. Use a pair of great big pliers on the crank snout, CAREFULLY, so you don't tear up the key.

Sometimes you have to back the crank gear off the crank just a little, so that both gears slide onto the crank and cam at a straight shot.
And FWIW, if the gears dots are lined up so the cam is at 6 o clock and the crank gear is 12 o clock, it is not TDC #1, its TDC #6...but that OK

i've always put the cam gear on last, with the chain o nthe crank gear and on the cam gear and just sort of work it on the dowel and bolt it up. it's like it'll fall right on when you have it lined up right but it'll beat you up if you don't.
