Another timing question.

I went to time my rebuilt 305 and I have a question. I hooked up the timing light to the number 1 plug but when I shine the light the mark is about 6 inches off to the right. As I adjust it and it get closer to the timing tab it starts running worse. Do I have the distributor off a notch or something? would it run like that?

Sounds more like the balancer slipped.

Like Madmax said, your balancer may have slipped. Or possibly you forgot to disconnect the distributor ecm wire.
