Big problem, total engine rebuild or not :( Unsure where to go

Please take your time to read this through, I am begging you for all I have to help me here.

Alright I haven't driven my ol' maro in about 3 months, I had it running, but leaking oil like a sob!

It has Super ram, ligenfelter 58mm tb, accel dfi 6.0, afr 190, paxton sn-89 (installed about 5 months ago) and accel fuel management with the 2 ***** adjusting WOT and idle air/fuel ratio.

My problem is it is leaking like crazy and motor has NOT been acting right. I took it to a man that said he could tune it here in NY (some DFI expert) and he gave it back to me in the same shape as it was in. He said without knowing internals he couldn't help me and didn't charge but for 1 hour of labor (he said he messed with it for hours trying to get it to idle smooth and run correctly. When I stomp it black smoke comes out the back, and the passenger side header is RUSTED through at the top. I am not sure how far I can take this project at the current moment. I am currently taking everything apart and thinking about selling everything fuel injection wise and going with a carb. I really like the idea of having a laptop hooked up and being able to tune it myself but I don't understand all the installation of everything and what all these electrical connections go to.

The man that had the car before me did NOT use the proper wiring splicing and the black tape is coming loose on everything, I am at a loss for words for what I am getting myself into...I can't drive it in its current state, but I can't honestly afford to put in the motor of my dreams for another few months. I would like to go with the DFI and have a system I can control myself but everyone I am talking to is telling me to get away from the fuel injection. (saying the 6.0 dfi is not the best management system ever)

I really like the fuel injection, it makes me curious and I want it...but I am not sure if the benefits outweigh the simplicity of a carb.

I'm asking for any tips on what I should do:

Sell all the parts and build my own?

Keep what I got and try to make it work?

I do not want an all out drag vehicle and would enjoy driving the maro many miles with extreme performance. I would like to aim for as much hp/tq and get the best effiency I can get.

Sorry this is so long I know your tired of my rambling, I just have so much to think about with this third gen

Thanks in advance guys, you guys always have the right answers.

What the heck did you do to get "probation" with only 33 posts?

I'd do this first...fix what you know needs fixin...i/e the hole in the header, oil leak...just have to track it down, etc.

Call Mr. Gasket and get the DFI install manaul (may even be on thier website) and go through it all with proper connections, etc.

I think there is still a DFI forum you can pick brains on when you get to tuning it.

This is strange about the probation? I'll ask a moderator.

I thought I had the header collectors off and nope, I didn't. There is ZERO clearence to pull the headers off the collectors, I have deemed it impossible.

I need to know the engine internals to tune correctly and I don't know them. I know something isn't right with the motor, I don't know if I am running lean or rich sometimes, it is just a total nightmare.

You'll need to data log your DFI...should give you a lot of info to go on.

You really need the manual, then head to the DFI_ECM Forum.

Black smoke is rich...start there:0

Can you talk to the previous owner and get any info?

Dump it on someone else once you get it running right.

I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole!

That thing is an elecrtical nightmare.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how hard would it be to replace all the dfi wiring the guy rigged?

On a scale of 1 to 10 how hard would it be to rip all the junk out and go carb?

Hard unless you know GM wires. Then it's easy.

That is a different kentle of fish. Study the diagrams and see if you want to try it. It isn't that bad but not for everyone. Please report back with your findings.
