L98 engines are not rare, they are just TPI 350 cubic inch engines that came on corvettes and some camaros/firebirds.
LS doesn't stand for anything I believe, but the code refers to (at least on modern day engines) the type of fuel injection-like the LT1 had a certain EFI system, LS1's have their own EFI system.
however, GM used to make large cube engines many years ago with the LS6 code.

You're pretty close iroc5...L98, LS1, LT1, L03, ect., ect. are the RPO codes for each engine.

The L98 is the rarer (and more desireable) of the various engines available in Third Gens (excluding the 3.8 Turbo). Just think about it, how many guys swap their L98s for a 305? When I was looking for my GTA back in 1991, I could find TONS of 305s but very few 350s.

As Trans Ams go, the 5.7 is definitely one of the rarer engine options as most of the 5.7s ended up in GTAs (and a few Formulas) for Firebirds.

being more rare than the others certainly doesn't qualify the L98 as rare. they are far from rare. rare would be the 4 cylinder models and 3.8's. the four cylinder is obviously not desired, but considerably less made than the L98.

So, excluding the 3.8 Turbo, which stock engine would your prefer to have in your 3rd Gen?

Stock engine? Any 350 will do. Anything less is a waste of the car.

my choice would be the L98 in 89 with g92 option. doesn't make it rare, but the choice i'd pick.

Zippy, based on the classic definition of the word "rare" (i.e. very limited production) and desireable, only one engine in a Thirdgen truly qualifies and that is the Turbo 3.8 in the TTA.

I cannot say about the area you live, but original 5.7s in a Thirdgen are hard to find where I live. As a strict definition of the word "rare", I would agree that the 5.7 does not meet the word.

The 5.7 is a "less common" engine and is desireable. What the real gest of my comment was directed more of the fact of the 5.7 being available in a basic Trans Am per se. There are some who've argued that a 5.7 was never available in a basic Trans Am; which is untrue. It just isn't common to find a 5.7 in a basic Trans Am. Which is what I am trying to say to the original poster.

I guess to add my 2 pennies (.283 I believe when converting to US$) I can't find 5.0L!!! I found my GTA 5.7 89 with G92 options (but no code), and there are currently 4 other GTA's that are 88 89 and 90 with 5.7's. also a month ago or so I found 3 88/89 IROC's with 350's ..... I guess you guys should come shopping up here .

How ya on the LT1 and LS6, new days like now ... it is an RPO code like said above, old days LS6 was a 454 BB that I believe the corvette and Chevelle got and others??? and the LT1 was a rapid fire 350 with 360hp that the Nova SS got in 1970, that's all I know .... say it on speedvision earlier in the month.
