Help me line up top dead center

Ok, i am to the point on my cam swap where i am putting the new timing set back on and trying to get it in time. Now i always thought that to set the timing right it was dot to dot (cam dot @ 6 o clock and crank at 12 o clock) but i have done some research and found that it both 12 o clock. I have done a search but it seems like ive found both answers, now keep in mind the heads are off also,THanks

Do it either way, it makes no difference.

it makes alot of differance reguardless of what you might read on the internet. dot to dot is best for installing them and lining them up. both dots up (after installing dot to dot) will be firing on #1. dot to dot would be firing on #6

Dot to dot is the easiest because it's easier to see them together. Once the dots are lined up, make sure the distributor is dropped in with the rotor pointing to where you want the #1 plug wire to be.

Wouldn't you want to have it dot to dot when installing the cam? Then when that is done right, turn it over till both dots at 12:00 for the dist. install? Both at 12 is #1 fireing position. Cam at 12 and crank at 6 is # 6 fireing position.
