Racy heads for a 406
I did a search and couldn't find alot of info on heads in the 215cc range. I know AFR heads are great but also know there are other choices. Just seems that anyone that has them is constantly beating their chest telling you how great they are. Plans are for a track only type car within the next few years, glide, solid roller, etc etc. I picked up a 400 block and may even build a 421.
I am interested in the edelbrock vic. jr.'s, TFS R, and probably pro toplines now that comp cams has purchased them. I know Brodix Track 1's are an option and work awesome but I am assuming they are 500.00 more than the heads I mentioned. Any suggestion?

Can't remember where I heard it. Either a mag or one of the car shows on spike TV. Comp is going to sell them under their old Racing Head Service division.

Summit has a head and cam package that uses a set of trick flows on a 383 that makes over 500 hp with pump gas. Just look at the trick flow ads in Summit. There are several dyno charts on two pages. Read the fine print and it'll show how many cubes are used. If you go with a 406 or larger then this package would really be awesome. On my 406 I went with AFR 195's and a ZZ-X camshaft. The cam specs are .559 lift and 241 @ .050. My combo also makes over 500 hp.

For 600 hp a good Combo is the AFR 210's with about 11:1 with a cam that has about .630 lift. There is a specific cam that has been used for 600 hp with the heads mentioned above. I'll try to get the cam specs.

I have a friend running ported out vic jr's on a 408 and running 6.20 in the 1/8. The car with him in it weights about 3400lbs.
His trap speed is 108 in the 1/8.
These heads are good for over 500hp out of the box. He is running the 215's. He is in the 650 hp range also.

Comp Cams just recently purchased All Pro's but I am not sure they are completey geared up and running yet. All this happened just recently. They were okay when they were being made, not all that popular though, I am sure Comp Cams will make some improvements, design changes, etc...only time will tell, flow numbers etc...
I use AFR heads on a big block in my Chevelle and I love them. I have posted about this before. They also make great small block heads. I talked to AFR personally about my combo and they CNC ported the heads and had Comp Cams custom grind a roller cam to match the flow number which were 370 cfm on intake side with a small 305 cc intake runner. Very good numbers considering the compitition usually has 340 cc or larger intake runner to get that kind of flow.
Just as a side note, if you watched the pump gas drags last year, out of the top ten finishers in the race, 5 of them had AFR heads,,,,,,,including the winner. I am sold on them and will buy them again on my next motor build whether it be big or small block chevy. There are alot of choices, just personal preference, brand loyalty etc....I think you can reach your horsepower goal with quite a few cylinder heads out there. Larry.

All Pro was not bought out by Comp Cams. Pro-Topline was bought out by Comp Cams. All Pro is a company geared towards more hardcore racers. There out of Johnstown Ohio (740) 967-8860 But they are expensive so you might want to think about them last.

I've got a new set of pro action heads on my 406 with .600 lift and I love them. They are the 23 degree pro aluminum lightnings. They have 200cc runners. I am really happy with them.

All Pro heads are about the baddest heads mentioned in this thread. Even there 23 degree head flows well over 300Cfm outta the box...badass heads, you are gonna pay alot for them.
Any of the heads you mentioned would be good on your 400+ cube engine. I wouldn't run most of them out of the box tho. Look into getting a good port job..you will not regret it. 400 blocked strokers have one serious problem...thats the issue af needing alot of air...so you need a hell of a head.
My boss runs a 434 CI SBC w/ All Pro heads in his rear engine dragster. He runs 7.80's at 160+. He feels the heads could be holding him back..
