Crazy Engine installation problem with the torque converter

Ok well i installed my LT1 headed 305 with the transmission attached today. Then i go to bolt the torque converter to the flexplate and i can't even get the torque converter to budge. It won't move even with with some impuse motivation. When i took the engine out i took the tranny out seperately. I could move the torque converter easily by hand to get the bolts.

What the hell is going on! I'm gonna drop the tranny now and redo the bitch. What would cause this? **** and everything was going slicker than teflon. Damn!

Help please!

You mean you couldn't spin the converter in the tranny or that you couldn't turn the motor over to get to the next bolt?

I mean i couldn't move the converter independently of the motor. The motor, flexplate and torque converter all moved together. If i rotated the motor over to align a bolt the converter moved with it.

Its crazy!

Do you have paint or some other matter in the alignment hole on the crankshaft?

I don't think so. I just pulled the motor, put it on the engine stand. Then i swapped cams, and heads, then bolted the tranny back up.

Can you turn the torque converter in the opposite direction?

Did you pull the converter up to the flexplate to bolt it up or... was it already against the flexplate It might not be engaged properly into the transmission and is sticking out too far.

Thats probably it, the TC was already touching the flexplate. I thought i had it seated properly, because if its not the tranny will not bolt up. But i bet thats it, damn.

Tranny dropping time!

it coudlnt hurt to jsut loosen everything up, and move the motor away a bit. Make sure you get that converter seated properly if it isnt already.

I might try and see if i can pull the tranny away from the block offthe dowels if i can. Hopefully that will work because i don't want to take the driveshaft out. I have some extra crossmembers under there for my decoupling torque arm that might get in the way.

This is why I always pull and install the engine and transmission as one unit. It just seems easier to me.

I did install them together. It was wicked easy to drop everything in. It dropped in like nothing, in 30 minutes.

I see what i did. In my original post i said i installed the LT1 headed 305 with the motor. That doesn't make any sense. It should be with the transmission.

You should be able to pull the TC back and have a decent ammount of clearance with the trans installed. If not, its not keyed into the front pump correctly. I wouldnt turn it any more untill you get it sorted out.
