Overheating again

Here is the story
I have a 91 L03. New thermostat, new radiator, and new upper and lower radiator hoses. It is overheating like no other. Initially it the fan would not kick on so I had the fan wired so it would stay on. Still overheats. What else should I try? The air damn is intact. It is around a 60/40 mix of antifreeze and water.

Could it be the water pump, is it leaking?
Is there any possibility the thermostate is in backwards? "it happens"
Faulty sending unit/guage.
There arent many things that could make it run hot since you already taken car of most of them.

All good suggestions. Here's a few more: Did you put the "anti-collapse" spring back in the lower rad hose? It's important so the pump doesn't suck the lower hose flat as a pancake every time you rev the engine up a little.

After that, it's time for a new water pump- whether it's leaking or not. External leaks mean squat if the impeller's corroded away to nothing inside.

I have done almost the same thing as NEO except radiator and hoses, but I have had two motors in my 85 TPI IROC with a 305, one that came stock with the car and another i have had put in that came from another 85 tpi IROC that has only 44,000 miles. They both have overheated and i cant figure what is wrong so if anyone else has any ideas what the problem could be me and NEO would really be happy to find out what might be wrong with are Camaro's

I changed everything you did, and mine still was running around 260 and up, so I put in a new water pump and that fixed my overheating woes. advance auto sells water pumps for $25 brand new.

Took me about an hour to do it a couple years ago, pretty easy to do. And that included a complete flush and refill. I check for bad water pumps by taking out the thermostat putting the housing back on and filling with water till its about 3 in. from the top, that way you can check if your getting good flow by just looking down the radator cap, you should see lots of coolant pumping from the crossflow tubes.

With and electric fan its easy "very easy"
It took me 20min to intall one in my friends 89 Z28 in autozones parking lot with thier " vast variety of tools "
It should not take longer than 45min for a novice.

UPDATE:
Fan blows air proper direction.
I took the thermostat out.
I looked in the radiator and saw the water flowing in from the hose. That means the water pump is working right?
What is next to check?

just currious, when you replaced the radiator did you change the cap too? Sometimes a leaky cap can cause the system not to be pressurized and boil. If you're temp gauge is actually reading 260 then that's probably not it, but if you didn't replace it, it couldn't hurt, only 3 bucks or so.

Neo,

To recap (correct me anywhere I'm wrong), you have a new radiator, new radiator hoses, and a new themostat. You have a 60/40 mix of coolant to water. Hmmm...

Answer a few questions, please:

1. The car has ___________ miles on it and I last flushed the cooling system at ____________ miles;

2. My base ignition timing is set at ____________ degrees BTDC;

3. My coolant mixture is ____________ percent water and ____________ coolant concentrate;

4. The thermostat set point is ____________ degrees Farenheit;

5. The engine temperature reaches ____________ degrees when I'm (circle one) driving at cruising speed / driving in town or idling;

6. The pressure cap is tested to relieve pressure at ____________ PSI (We're presuming the check valve in the cap is working, allowing the system to refill from the expansion tank);

7. The radiator and AC condenser have ____________ pounds of crap in the fins (HINT: should be ZERO with a new radiator);

8. I refilled the system ____________ times after replacing the radiator to compensate for entrapped/expelled air;

9. The radiator filler opening (circle one) Does / Does Not show signs of air bubbles in the coolant when the engine is idling hot;

10. I am (circle one) Really tired / Just a Little Annoyed / Not Bothered by this stupid quiz.

Answers:

1. The car has 108k (engine 20k) miles on it and I last flushed the cooling system at >2k miles ago, when the new radiator went on.

2. My base ignition timing is set at 0 (I believe, I do not have a timing gun. When I replaced it I just put it on, stupid I know.) degrees BTDC;

3. My coolant mixture is 60-70 percent water and 30-40 coolant concentrate

4. The thermostat set point is 180* degrees Farenheit

5. The engine temperature reaches 260* degrees when I'm driving in town or idling;

6. The pressure cap is tested to relieve pressure at 16lbs.

7. The radiator and AC condenser have 0 pounds of crap in the fins

8. I refilled the system two times after replacing the radiator to compensate for entrapped/expelled air;

9. The radiator filler opening Does Not show signs of air bubbles in the coolant when the engine is idling hot;

10. I am Not Bothered by this stupid quiz. ANything to solve my delemia
