What to fix next?
Hi, this is yet another topic concerning emissions. I failed because I was running extremely rich, it was running like that for a few months before that. I was pissed so I put the car away for the winter. Now I start working on it . So in the last couple of weeks I put her up on ramps and have put in these new parts....
-MSD 6A (+ harness for coil)
-MSD 8.8 wires
-MSD coil
-Accel shorty plugs
-Accel cap&rotor
-Ford Motorsport 19lb Injectors
-AC/delco o2 sensor
-Carsound Cat
-cleaned plenum/runners
-tested EGR (=fine)
-cleaned IAC
and so it goes, I start the car up and take a sniff of the fumes outback and can still detect an ample gas smell. What else did I miss? The car Idles fine, pops a bit when I rev and let off the gas.
Any ideas where to look next? THX

How's your fuel pressure? And how did the plugs come out when you changed em...dark and sooty? Oh and when you first start it, it will always smell rich, because it is....gotta give it time to get to normal operating temp and get the O2 sensor heated and working right, so it can go into closed loop.
Also, how is your ignition timing?

Oh, I forgot to mention also in my list...
a new Holley AFPR...set to 42 with vacuum line off.
Timing I have not checked (turns out the used gun I had was junk). The plugs came out with some black on it. Odd thing was that on some of the plugs the white base that holds the element was exactly half still white and the other blackend a bit.

What's your stock fuel pressure? And are those FMS injectors flowing more than your stock injectors?
Maybe you've got too much pressure. I made the mistake of having too much, even though "stock" I had 40 psi....my stock regulator was faulty. I dropped pressure to where it should have been, about 34.....and the car ran WAY better.
I believe Ford and GM injector flow rates are rated at different pressures or something, so that might have an effect.

Not sure what my stock fuel pressure was before the afpr. But I've searched these boards and come to the understanding that setting 42psi with the vacuum line off was standard as it dropped to about 35 with it on. If the ford is rated differently, then maybe I will drop it some more. Any idea what I should set it too?

I'd tell ya if I knew...but being it's Ford injectors on modified GM stuff.....well, it's a bit of an oddball. And I'm not exactly a GM guy anymore, so....
Lol
If you really wanna get it straightened out, bring it to a dyno that can do air/fuel, and have it tuned.... But you could drop the fuel pressure just a few psi and read the plugs again...and keep working at this. But it's not the most accurate way. For example I varied fuel pressure by as much as 10 psi and got wildly different results, but the plugs revealed very little. They went from dark tan, to....a lighter shade of dark tan.
But then that motor never ran right from day one.
Also get a timing light and check your timing, might be on the retarded side...

thanks for your replies Nixon, I found that the ford 19lb injectors are to be used with 38-39psi, so I will try backing down my pressure to that with the vacuum line off. As for Timing, I am now shopping for a light and will adjust that soon.

OK, just failed another emissions test today. Cant figure out what to do next. Ive done a lot already.
set timing at 0* fuel pressure down to 38psi with ford injectors.
Results...
HC >>> Curb idle 92 (200max) Drive 90 (55max)
All else was fine, less than half the allowable.
What do I do next????? gotta be something to drag down my HC.
Anybody? Anything? Much thanks would be appreciated.

6 months old.....well it might not be the freshest... Did you put any stabalizer in the tank? If not you might want to try running that tank out, maybe putting a little water remover in it....then fill it up with fresh gas and see what happens.
Someone ought to chime in here who works at a station or has experience with one. There are certain specific causes usually for a type of gas to be present more than others...if someone knows what creates excessive hydrocarbons under load, put your two cents in!

6 month old gas will not help you out at all lol.
i would run that tank of gas till it's near empty then put in some of the highest octane pump gas available locally, then give it a try on the dyno... definetely check the timing though.
