Help on my 82-Z W/Gears & Cam

Couple Questions, first off, I own the 82 Z, and yes it has the crossfire 305, and I know you guys will probably bash it, but its been a great strong running engine ever since I added my fuel chip, headers and exhaust. its a great running car, and I want to keep the 305, so here is my questions.. I cant tell what my stock gear ratio is on the rear end, its too hard to tell and the numbers are faded on the axle. It is a 82Z28 with the 305 crossfire. Do you know by chance what my gear ratio is? and I want to add some lower gears, probably 3.42's or 3.73, but I heard It would be tuff, because I need the .26 spline. Does anyone know where I can get it? Or should I just buy a whole new axle with disc brakes? Are the axles hard to change on these cars, Ive never dealt with that before.. also, I am looking into getting a cam, There is so many options out there on cams, I need something that is still street legal, but will give me more performance than my stock cam. what do you think I should go with? can you maybe reply with a link to the cam that you think I should go with? So I can research it a little more? that would be great.. thanks alot guys.. I will be awaiting your response.. I want disc brakes in the rear, and lower gears, so do you think its smarter to get a whole new axle in the rear? what does it take to change it? let me know what you think my best approach is.

Nate

You probably have 2.93 or 3.23 gears. The axle code is three-character, stamped on the front of the passenger side axle tube. But, the sure way to know is to remove the rear cover and check the number of teeth on the ring and pinion gears. They are typically stamped on the back of the pinion gear. Your gear oil probably needs to be changed anyway, so this is the best way to find out for sure.

The number of axle splines doesn't have anything to do with the gears you can put it. What matters is the type of carrier, but even then, you can get 3.42 or 3.73 gears in what they call a "2-series" carrier. 2.93's would be 2-series, 3.23's would be 3-series. If you get a different carrier, to get posi, for instance, then you need to be concerned with the number of axle splines.

If you want rear disks, the best bet would be to get a complete axle that already has disks, along with the master cylinder, proportioning valve, and park brake cables.

being an 82 you should have the th200 trans so without overdrive i wouldn't go any more than 3.42 and that's even a push. your going to have to keep the cam selection small since without porting the intake doesn't flow all that well. i'd say crane cams .440 lift engergizer would do it some good. or for a low cost great effect would be summit cam K1101 which is 194 and 204 at .050 and .398 and .420 lift. combined with summits G6801 1.6 ratio rockers it'd give you what you need with your set up. alot of low end to midrange torque. the crossfire intake won't flow well up high without some major port work, so that would be a great low rpm help and get that thing moving quickly with the gears. i would calculate what the lift would be with the extra 1.6 rockers, but i'm too lazy. any other thoughts???
