Bad Vibes!! Help!

My '86 Bird has a really bad vibration over 60mph and around 40mph. I tried two driveshafts, both with new u-joints, and the problem is still there.

The vibes are there if it is in neutral, the clutch is in or it is in gear (ie. all the time). To me, this rules out engine problems.

I did swap in a T5, could there be an alignment problem? How would I check for it?

I am at my wits end

Thanks in advance
Dale

Balance your tires?

Good, evenly worn tires on your car?

Front end aligned?

Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention that...

Rear tires are new and balanced. Front are not new but OK. I rotated the tires to see if that was the problem but there was no change.

The front end was aligned about a year ago, but the vibration is there even the car is run up to speed while on blocks.

Bent or twisted axle would be my guess.

If it does it on blocks...that obviously rules out anything in the front end.

Bent axle, huh? Makes sense.

Can I check for a bent/twisted axle without pulling the axles out?

Too easy...

To check for a bent axle, put the rear axle up on jack stands, put the car in gear, and look to see if a wheel wobbles. If it does, swap the left & right, and see if the wobble stays or moves to the other side. Same side = bent axle, moves to other side = bent wheel.

What about the torque arm??

Was the vibration there before or after the t5 swap?

What ABOUT the torque arm????

The vibes started about 1000 miles after the swap. The torque arm is attached using the T5 mount. I do not know how to tell if it is at the correct angle/position or not.

Well, I checked to see if the wheels wobbled per RB83L69's instructions and both sides have a little (3/64" +/-) wobble but I can't tell if it is the wheels/tires or axle.

Any other suggestions?? This is driving me nuts.

Thanks,
Dale

You may have an issue with the pinion angle, or possibly the tailshaft on the T-5. I'll try to find specs on the inclination of the pinion.

I would have better access, but I just spent most of yesterday afternoon and evening reinstalling Win98, configuring the system, and reinstalling most of the applications because of the Sircam.exe email virus infecting my boot sector. Really funny - I was rubbing the slide on a chrome 45ACP just waiting for something to "vent" on...

I wondered about the pinion angle when I put in the tranny but forgot about it when everything seemed alright at first.

How do I measure the angle? Can I just do this with a level and a protractor or do I need something more precise?

What is it supposed to be?

If it is wrong, how do I go about fixing it?

Thanks for all the help!!!!

BTW - I know how you feel about cleanng up after a virus (I prefer my 9mm tho. ).
