What do you think is causing this?

When i try to start the car it will turn over and start. However the rpms MIGHT get over 1000 then it just dies right away. Hitting the gas does nothin. It will do this 3 or 4 times before it actually starts and stays running. Then every now and then when im just crusing it will cut out and drop a couple hundred rpms then catch again. does this a few times. Every now and then ill be driving and will hear the fuel pump soundin like its either out of gas or somthin may be clogin it. But i KNOW i have gas in the tank. I usually have to stop and shut off the motor and let it sit a bit and restart it then it will go away. As well as when im coming to a light it will sometimes die on me. Other times when im startin to pull away from a light it feels like theres no power there at all. Or it will go normal but cut in and out of power. It still runs and never acts like it wants to die during this. Just like takin your foot off the gas then pressin it again. then after bit it goes like normal.

I changed the filter today and you could NOT blow through it at all. it almost lookes like rusted gas coming out of the filter or line. Not sure because when the lines were loose the filter was not all the way off yet.

Anybody know what this might be? i thought about lookin at the pump and strainer tomorrow. Anything else this might be?

Thanks,

The filter was a good first step. Testing the fuel pressure may also help to diagnose the problem. If you got a lot of contamination from the filter, it may be clogging again (already). You may have excessive rust and contamination in the tank, and filters will only remove it a little at a time.

stalling after preignition, then starting and almost stalling, tells me MAF sensor.

one time i had a very loose connection on the maf electrically and for the pipes, everytime a bump hit them the wrong/right way, it would try to stall/actually do it, and when they did that, it would not start and then start when it wanted to. Finally i disconnected the maf and problem was fixed forever.

I still run no maf, i dont run rich or lean, but fuel economy changed slightly. maybe becuase i can actually drive now, iunno.

Kind of sounds like a MAF problem to me. Is it setting any trouble codes?

UPDATE------

I replaced my strainer which looked bad and my fuel filter which i dont believe was bad. Problem still exsist. I unpluged the MAF and it fired right up. Problem now is when i put it into gear or come to a stop it dies. It will fire right the hell back up though. If you give it a bit of gas it will run just fine when you put it in gear. If i raise my idle will it help this? what does a new maf run? im tryin to sell the car and dont want to put a whole hell of a lotta money back into it since im sellin it for so cheap.

Im thinkin that i can raise my idle a bit to compensate for the change once put in gear ect... Right now it idles around 6-700rpm.

Thanks in advance.
