Do a search, this might even be a thread in the FAQ forum.

The HO is the L-69, available 83-86 IIRC.... Had a dual snorkle air cleaner, that's the easiest way to tell it apart...
Same heads.
Better cam
Bigger exhaust manifolds.
May or may not have a different intake manifold

Oil plug above the timing cover? You mean as in an oil filler tube that rises up out of the front of the intake?

In the past, there was a 1/8" pipe thread port from the main oil galley above the timing cover casting. It was typically plugged, I believe its orginal use was for a by-pass canister oil filter (no full-flow filter provision) in 1955 (and maybe 1956 - I'm not clear on that). Full-flow filters were added after that, but they kept that plug there.

What that has to do with LG4 vs. L69, I have no idea. They used the exact same blocks.

My 1983 LE9 "203" block as well as my 1992 LO5 "638" block has it.

I think he is talking about the oil fill cap which is on the front of an Oldsmobile 307. The 305 unless it was a van was always a twist on into the valve cover. My 305 van just had a fill tube that ran into the valve cover.

Basically here is the rundown on the L69 or LE9.

They came with flattop pistons with 4 reliefs for 9.5 in the L69 and 9.6:1 in the LE9. The L69 usually came with 416 heads while the LE9 had 601s with 53cc chambers. The cams were the same in both engines, sourced from the L81 corvette engine. Both came with larger exhaust, the manifolds, the vette style catalytic converter, and had duals. The L69 used a hotter EPROM in the ECM as well as special metering in the carb most are DRs with a K hanger. The LE9s are DRs on a F hanger, 73 primary jet and a 50M primary rod. T It is also debateable over whether those engines had a better fuel pump, I say they did. The LE9 used a hotter ignition timing curve which was done with the EPROM in the L69. Not all 305 HO came with the dual snorkel, the Monte Carlo SS engine was identical to the camaro one and did not have it. The LE9 had one large snorkel on the air cleaner. I have seen some LE9s and L69s that had cast iorn manifolds and I have seen even more with an aluminum intake. My LE9 had the aluminum intake. My LE9 also came from GM with an oil cooler. The stock converter was a 2,000 rpm stall too. HP for the L69 was 180 and 240 torque. HP for the LE9 was 190 and 245 torque.

Any other ?s let me know.

The FAQ thread I linked has all the information (including what Apeiron said).

Why is there a need to attempt to add things that are not true?

I always thought they had slightly higher compression and a lil larger lift bumpstick in them.

An 84 cutlass would probably have an Olds 307.

the 3.8l v6 was a buick motor riceater.......

he is talking about the 1/8 inch plug directly above the timing cover on the block. it is normally absent from 400 sbc's. but the 305 and the ho version used the same block so it is irelevent.

It's a buick motor, became a corporate motor, but technically made by buick, I had one for a few years... Kinda like the 307 was an olds motor, but came in caprices, and the cutlasses had 305s.... (????)

they put olds 403 motors in a pontiac t/a. is it a pontiac motor?no its olds. they put carb turbo 3.8l buick motors in mote carlos too. and of course the tta had the sfi lc2 in it. but it was a buick motor.

you are right , you should know.

but you didnt.

i wonder what else you should know but dont?
