Sudden low oil pressure??????

Help! I just noticed the oil pressure gauge of my 92 camaro. On warm up, the oil pressure is only 15. When the engine is warmed up, the needle drops down to 0. When I step on the accelerator, the needle goes back to only 15....it is the oil pump????

If the pressure were actually at zero you'd probably start hearing things. Senders have been known to die, so get your hands on a mechanical gauge so you can verify the dashboard gauge.

If you just noticed it, it could have been going on for quite a while, and as Enkil has noted, it would have done some bad things, probably.

However, as Enkil also suggested, get a mechanical oil pressure gauge and verify. Then we can start talking what to do if it is confirmed.

Or, considering what a pain it is to hook up a mechanical gauge, just replace the sending unit (which you'd have to take out to hook up another gauge anyway...) since that's the most likely cause of erroneous gauge readings. It's less than $20, and fixes the problem more than 80% of the time.

although RB83L69 does have a point, what if you get a faulty sending unit out of the box? It is not unknown.

The phrase, "Do it once, and do it right" means it may not be fun, but its done right.

That means, get a mechanical gauge on it, see what IT says, then get a replacement sending unit on there.

Just my thoughts on that subject.

While a true mechanical oil pressure guage is always nice to have, if you don't have one, then purchasing one to diagnos an oil pressure sending unit does incur additional expense and effort that is unnecessary; unless you plan to use a mechanical guage all the time.

The likelihood of a new oil pressure sending unit from GM being bad out of the box is little or nil.

I concur with RB and say just buy a new oil pressure sending unit. They are relatively inexpensive and fairly easy to R&R. I have already gone through a couple in the 10 years that I have owned my car. I consider them a maintenance item.
