custom CAI instructions?

Car: 1987 GTA/1998 Explorer
Engine: 355, trick flow heads, zz409 cam, 3
Transmission: 700r4, shift kit, valve body
Axle/Gears: precision 3.73's, auburn diff

sorry i know im supposed to search but all i found was this

and maybe im just stupid but im a little confused. my car had the emissions removed, or at least the air, what exactly does the smog canister do, and what will happen if i take it out? any loose ends i need to tie up if i remove it altogether?
anyone know of any other similar sites with directions for making one? also, whats a good air filter to use as i know a lot of you dont like k&n's?

I'll bump this for ya. K&N's are really good, I wouldn't worry about getting a better one.
